ANALYSIS
The following results are reported from Franklin, Henry, Patrick
and the City of Martinsville. Characteristics of those reporting
service needs:
- 75% reporting knew about the DSB
- 92% were persons with a disability
- 85% were male
- 54% were unemployed
- Disabilities represented were visual, hearing, physical, speech
and mental impaired, majority was physically impaired
- Averaged income reported was $25,744 (range 6,000-60,000)
- 31% receive SSDI
When asked to prioritize the most common problems found by persons
with disabilities and their families in obtaining services, the
results are ranked by number of responses as follows:
- Lack of service funding
- Lack of recreational programs, unavailability of housing,
unavailability of services
- Lack of transportation, lack of service providers, lack of
quality services, lack of service information
- Physical barriers, lack of accessible housing, lack of transition
programs, long waiting lists, lack of case workers, lack of vocational/job
coaches
- lack of referral services, lack of family support services,
lack of communication services, excessive cost for services, lack
of consumer supportive funding, lack of technological support,
lack of advocacy programs, lack of jobs for disabled
