RELIGION
I think Marilyn Manson (on Politically Incorrect) best summed it up by saying "I like the Bible as a book, the same way I like the Cat In The Hat." Although I don't agree with him on other things I do think this statement is a valid one. I mean really, people base ever decision in their life on a story that was written 2000 years ago. That thought brings up memories of a group named Heavens Gate who based their entire life on a little known story called Star Trek. If they hadn't killed their selves, in 2000 years they to could have had a prominent religion where Captain Picard is the Lord and Savior. What I'm trying to say is that there is not much difference between the two! Here's a definition of mythology?
'Mythology' is what we call someone else's religion. Christians need to watch what they say about the Heavens Gate group, because a lot of those criticism reflect back on them the same way.
"There is something feeble and a little contemptible about a man who cannot face the perils of life without the help of
comfortable myths."
-- Bertrand Russell
I am an Atheist. I admit this proudly. I will not hide this and I will not be intimidated by theist assertions that I will burn in Hell. I am a good person. I don't need god to help me with that. I don't need the Bible to tell me that killing and stealing is wrong. I can run my own life. I have my own morals.
I do not worship the Devil (As some theist think)or any other God or deity. I think, therefore I am an atheist. As an Atheist:
I worship the truth!
I worship reality!
And most of all I worship the human race!
"By the year 2000 we will, I hope, raise our children to believe in human potential, not God." -- Gloria Steinem
I am also a free thinker. Heres a definition of a free thinker: A person who forms opinions about religion on the basis of reason, independently of tradition, authority, or
established belief.
Why I don't believe in God you might ask. Well I don't believe in god for the same reason I don't believe in the Easter Bunny. There just no evidence (life its self does not count, evolution explains that). But for the most part I don't believe in God or Religion because of the amount of pain and suffering they have caused over the century's. Religion has caused more pain, suffering, violence, and war then any other force in the history of man kind.
"There is no such source and cause of strife, quarrel, fights, malignant opposition, persecution, and war, and all evil in the state,
as religion."
-- Supreme Court of Wisconsin Weiss vs District Board March 18, 1890
Almost every war in recorded history were fought under the flag of God or religion. From the crusades, and persecution of scientist to the bombing of abortion clinics and the beating of gays. All through out history religion has stunted the growth of human knowledge and the advancement of society. I mean the holiest of holy lands is a war zone! People die ever day for their "God". It seems to me that Christianity it's self has been the greatest offender of it's own commandments.
"The more the fruits of knowledge become accessible to men, the more widespread is the decline of religious belief."
-- Sigmund Freud
Organized religion has always had a resistance to the advancement of knowledge in society, especially science. Religion stills a thinking mind. Science can disprove or prove the existence of god. So far all evidence has pointed toward the nonexistence of God. So far Science has disproved many of the main ideas in the Bible. The Bible says the earth is flat. Anybody with eyes can see this is wrong from satellite photos. The Bible also say's the earth is the center of the universe. We knew that was wrong 300 years ago. The Bible's account of creation has utterly been destroyed by science in the last 150 years. Darwin's theory of evolution, the theory of the Big Bang and all of Albert Einstein's theories of space and time have disproved most biblical accounts. One of the many pieces of evidence that disproves the Bible's account of the creation of the universe, are stars. The Bible says the universe is 5000 years old. 90% of the stars in the galaxy that we can see are much more then 5000 (More like millions) light years away. If the universe is only 5000 years old, how are we able to see these stars? This would suggest that the universe is billions of years old. If the Bible is mistaken in telling us where we came from, how can we trust it to tell us where we're going?
"I have never seen the slightest scientific proof of the religious theories of heaven and hell, of future life for individuals, or of a
personal God."
-- Thomas Edison
The Bible was written 800 years before scientific theory had been discovered. Christian theology is not only opposed to the scientific spirit; it is opposed to every other form of rational thinking. Religion has to be believed, science only has to be seen.
"The creationists have this creator who is evil, who is small-minded, who is malevolent, and who is not very bright and can't
even get his science right. Creationists have made their creator in their own image, in my view."
-- Professor Ian Plimer
A long time ago when I was a Christian I was taught that god is a loving god. If god is loving, why must I fear him? The problem begins with the terminology, of calling a religious devout person "god fearing". You can understand my discontent with this paradox of fearing a loving god. You fear god because he can send you to hell. You do good because god will send you to hell if you don't. You are weak willed. In a sense neither god or you is good. I think that it's pretty ignorant to contest that people will kill, steal, and rape if they don't believe in god. It seems that more people do those things in the name of god.
There are a hundred church members by inheritance for every one by conviction. Children believe in god for the same reason they believe in Santa Clause, Their parents tell them its true. They accept it without question and without evidence. Take in to account this idea: Someone is born and raised away from ALL ideas of religion or god. Know imagine someone explaining the idea of god and religion to this person as an adult. They would think it was completely insane to believe in something that has no evidence what so ever, besides a 2000 year old book. The invisible and nonexistent look very much the alike.
"Religion is excellent stuff for keeping common people quiet."
-- Napoleon Bonaparte
