Pre-1926 A-Routes

A-1
Started in Fort Smith.  Followed the basic route of modern US 64 all the way to Conway.  From Conway it followed modern AR 365 to North Little Rock.  It then followed modern US 70 to Forrest City, AR 50 to east of Simsboro, and AR 147 to Lehi.  A-1 picked up modern US 70 from there, following it to presumably the ferry docks east of West Memphis.

A-2
Started at Texarkana.  Followed the route of US 67 to Arkadelphia, with a few sections following modern county roads.  From Arkadelphia, it followed AR 51 to Donaldson, rejoining modern US 67.  It then followed 67 through Little Rock , multiplexed with A-1 for a couple of miles, and followed modern AR 161 to Jacksonville.  It followed Old US 67 to AR 367, and basically followed AR 367 to Newport, with an exception north of Searcy, where it followed Old US 67.  From Newport A-2 followed US 67 along with some older routings to the Missouri border.

A-3
Started near Gateway at A-4.  Followed present day US 62 to Harrison, US 65 to Damascus and AR 124/285/25 to Conway (This is also an old routing of US 65).  From Conway A-3 multiplexed with A-1 (modern AR 365) to North Little Rock, then followed Broadway (US 70B) in Little Rock to AR 365.  Followed AR 365 to Pine Bluff, then followed US 65 to Mc Gehee.  It then followed AR 159/35/county roads back to US 65, followed 65 to Lake Village, and AR 159/county roads to Eudora.  From Eudora it followed AR 8 and a county road to the LA border.

A-4
Began in Gateway at the MO border.  Followed US 62 to Rogers, and US 71B to Fayetteville.  Followed US 71 to Alma, multiplexed with A-1 (US 64) to Fort Smith, then followed US 71B and US 71 to just west of Greenwood. It then followed AR 10S to Greenwood, and a county road over Backbone Mountain, rejoining US 71 north of Witherville, where the four-lane currently ends.  It then followed US 71 to Waldron, US 71B through Waldron, then US 71 all the way to Mena, with the exception of some county roads in Polk Co.  From Mena it followed AR 375 to Potter, Polk Co. 37 back to modern 71.  From here it basically followed US 71 to De Queen, with the exception of a detour through Hatton and between Grannis and Gillham, where it followed Polk Co. 1.  From DeQueen, A-4 followed AR 41 to Foreman, and AR 32 to Ashdown.  From here it followed US 71 all the way to the LA border, except for a few bypassed segments.

A-5
Started in Little Rock at A-2.  Followed AR 367 to where it joins US 167.  From this point it followed US 167 to Farindale, AR 48 to south of Tulip, AR 9 to Eagle Mills, and US 79/79B to Camden.  From here it followed AR 376 to Louann, AR 7B through Smackover, and AR 7 to the junction with AR 7S.  From here it followed AR 7S and US 167B through El Dorado, and US 167 to the LA border.

A-6
Began at Y-City at A-4 (US 71).  From here it followed US 270 to Hot Springs.  It then turned north and followed modern AR 7 to Fountain Lake, and AR 5 all the way to Benton, where it ended at A-2.  The route from Hot Springs to Benton is another old routing of US 70.

A-7
Began in Walnut Ridge at A-2 (US 67).  Followed AR 91 to Jonesboro, US 63B through Jonesboro, and AR 463 to Payneway.  From there A-7 basically followed US 63 all the way to Turrell, where it picked up the route of AR 77.  It ended in West Memphis at A-1 (US 70).
