Paragraphs Omitted
from Published Version
of My Capitol Weekly Commentary on Assisted Suicide
- In a Minnesota Law Review article about assisted
suicide from an African-American perspective, authors Patricia A. King and
Leslie E. Wolf argue that "this society does not have a sufficient understanding
of how and why competent individuals are rendered vulnerable near the end
of life.... If we do not fully appreciate the multiple ways in which an individual's
autonomy and well-being can be compromised, we cannot modify existing institutional
arrangements and practices in the health care system in ways that will empower
and protect all patients."
- A study published last year in the Journal of Disability
Policy Studies found that after balanced pro and con presentations on the
issue, a clear majority of respondents with disabilities believed that legalization
would lead to involuntary deaths and discriminatory medical care. More than
a dozen state and national disability organizations officially oppose assisted
suicide.
