This suite consists of seven short vignettes written
in 7/8 time, an uncommon meter in most Western music. As I worked
on this suite, I began to see some parallels between working in 7/8 time
and living with a disability in a non-disabled world. Living with
a disability, like writing music in 7/8 time, forces you to do things a
little differently, but the results often can be a pleasant surprise.
For me, Vignette No. 4, "On a Lark," seems particularly relevant to my experience as a woman with a disability. It reminds me of how I sometimes feel when I'm out on my Lark scooter. (In fact, it will come as no surprise to learn that I named this vignette after my Lark.) It starts with the exhilarating feeling of freedom I get because my Lark helps me go wherever I want to go. One section sounds the way it feels when I ride my scooter over cobblestones and uneven brick, as I have in places like Washington, DC. As I think the music suggests, I may encounter unexpected barriers, but ultimately I reach my destination anyway. Those who like blues or jazz may find "Triple Play" (Vignette No. 7) the most enjoyable of these vignettes. In any case, you can listen to/download the vignettes separately or get the whole suite as a single piece (No. 8 below). The individual vignettes and the full suite also are available in MP3 format at my MP3 website, MP3.com.au/LauraRemsonMitchell. 1. Exploring
the Possibilities.
