Dump the Gregorian Calendar now!Up with the Decimal Calendar! |
"Thirty days hath September, June, July, and November...
damn, that ain't right! Now, how does that go again?"
Do you sometimes forget how that goes? Does the whole business about 28 days in February seem strange? Does it bother you that there is no precise answer to the question "how long is a month"? At work, do you ever get really annoyed when you have to do things like convert 0.7 man-years into man-months? Well so do I.
Let's face it, we have a weird calendar system that evolved over time, that started with folks who believed in astrology and ended with Emperors and Popes tacking on days here and there. It doesn't have to be that way any longer, since I have invented a much more rational calendar system.
I propose that the calendar be divided into 10 months, instead of 12. Each month would be either 36 or 37 days long. Odd-numbered months would be 37 days long, and even-numbered months would be 36 days long. In leap years, the extra day would remain tacked on to the end of February (to keep from mucking up fixed-date holidays), becoming February 37th.
To demonstrate how the Decimal calendar would work, I created a Decimal Calendar for 1998, shown below. In order to have only 10 months, I did away with June and July. The reason why I chose these months was to keep the new months roughly coincident with the old months. Each of the new months coincide with at least a few days of the old month that way, the biggest divergence being in the middle of the year.
(Some folks have written to say that I should come up with
new names for the months to avoid confusion, but making up names is not my cup of
tea. If anyone wants to take a stab at new names, I'll post your suggestions. A Mr.
Wade George recently e-mailed (
If you look at my calendar, you'll notice that it's very easy to predict what day of the week at date will fall in the next month. For example, January 30 falls on a Friday, and February 30 falls on a Sunday. This is because since January is 5 weeks and 2 days long (37 days), the date will advance 2 days in the week. And likewise, March 30 will fall on a Monday, because February, being an even-numbered month, is only 5 weeks and 1 day long (36 days).
In the new calendar, Ground Hog's Day falls on January 33rd. Valentine's Day falls on February 8th. Saint Patrick's day falls on March 3rd. Independence Day falls on August 2nd. Halloween falls on November 12th. Christmas falls on December 30th.
