The council has once again been very active since our last meeting. Delegates attended Bill 99 workshops which included a Labour's Voice in the Community television show. We finalized the establishment of a satellite clinic from the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers Inc. The clinic will be situated at the office of the Greater Kingston Area Injured Workers Association location and will be opened four or five days a month.
The Kingston Day of Action was announced for June 8th. The planning committees will be meeting tomorrow night at 7:00 here at the Steelworkers Hall. The steering committee for the Day of Action will be formed on April 28 at 7:00 also here at Steelworkers hall. We will be opening the headquarters for the Kingston Day of Action at 400 Elliott Avenue ,Rock Cliff Plaza on May the 14th. The Limestone District School Board has moved the April 24th P. A. day to June 8th which ensures that the public and high schools will be closed. We have assurances from the Quinte St. Lawrence Building Trades Council that all trades will be off work on the Day of Action. Natalie Mehra the community co-chair and the Kingston Action Network are gearing up to ensure that June 8th will be an absolute success.
Members of our council have been supporting the CAW members on strike at Kingston Dodge Chrysler. We constructed a street banner to raise awareness of the National Day of Mourning. This banner will hang across Princess Street at Clergy from April 24th until May 1st. Our Day of Mourning ceremony has been organized with speakers and once more the local high schools are involved with the poster contest to raise the issue of health and safety. The committee deserves our thanks for all their efforts on our behalf and I would encourage all delegates to plan on attending this important event.
Delegates from our Labour Council should also plan on attending an important forum sponsored by CUPE- Ontario. The panel will hear submissions dealing with issues affecting children.
The process of selecting a replacement for Oliver Doyle as the labour staff rep for United Way has begun. We're fortunate to have had a number of excellent candidates apply. The labour council will certainly be well represented when the selection is made.
The Education Committee held a successful school at Chaffey's Locks last weekend and deserve our thanks for job well done.
I would also ask each delegate to please take the message back to their affiliates to get involved with our Day of Action. We cannot be successful without the full participation of the total labour movement and our community partners.
In closing, please join me in welcoming our latest affiliate the Kingston Professional Firefighters Association.
As always,
In solidarity,
Charlie Stock
