PRESS RELEASES

KINGSTON & DISTRICT LABOUR COUNCIL

FOR IMEDIATE RELEASE: JANUARY 19th, 1999

Kingston and District Labour Council and our United Way

Kingston: K.D.L.C. Executive Statement

The 1998 United Way serving Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington fundraising campaign is drawing to a close and once again, working women and men in our community contributed over 65% of the dollars raised.

The campaign proceeds will be directed to social and health agencies providing assistance to approximately 1 in 3 people in our community, including our members and their families. With trends towards downsizing in both public and private sector workplaces, more pressure is being placed on communities, especially through United Way agencies, who are sometimes the only source of help available, to provide assistance to those in need.

This labour council would like to thank and acknowledge all those who contributed to the success of the United Way campaign. Our board members who serve as labour's voice in the decision making process, our labour staff rep working out of the United Way office. All the central union offices, the Ontario Federation of Labour, the Canadian Labour Congress for issuing written endorsation in support of United Way, all local leadership who encouraged labour's involvement in workplace campaigns.

Our labour council in conjunction with our affiliated unions and their members has been instrumental in building a strong and healthy community.

The United Way slogan holds particularly true for labour "Without you, there would be no way"
