The 1998 poster contest was designed to raise the awareness of students and the community to the often forgotten men and women who suffer injury, occupational disease and loss of life that results from exposure to occupational hazards, and the efforts to make workplaces safer places. The contest was open to all students in the Kingston region. Awards to be presented April 28th, at the Kingston Day of Mourning Ceremony.

" It’s your life, don’t leave work without it" was the theme of the poster contest this year. All works reflect the main theme around remembrance of those who have not returned home from work and prevention of work related injury and disease to those who suffer.

Each year in Ontario hundreds of working people leave home to attend work and never return. Thousands of others return home but without full health as a result of occupational injury or disease. Students who gain summer employment or work throughout the year in part time jobs are not exempted from these statistics.

The Day of Mourning on April 28th of each year is an internationally recognized day to remember those workers who have died or have been injured while earning a living. In Canada the Canadian Labour Congress initiated the day in 1984 and Provincial Labour Federations followed suite. The Canadian legislature officially recognized the day in 1991 by way of a private members bill passed into law. For the past number of years all three levels of government and workers and employers have observed this day in remembrance of workers.
