. . . Most songbooks have dozens of songs about how life is so wearisome and painful, and how that will all end when we "go to Heaven" where all is peace and happiness, and we can just lie around feeling good for all eternity.
. . . The Bible says there will be work to do in the new Jerusalem (which will be on Earth.) (Revelation 22:3 "His bond-servants shall serve him.") Before then, there will also be work to do. "They will reign with him" (Revelation 20:6) is more than just a figure of speech! We will indeed wield power on the earth! 1 Thessalonians 4:14-17, 1 Corinthians 15:51-53, 1 John 3:2, Jude 14-15, Luke 20:9-18, and Luke 19:27 describe what is to be done. The relief will not be in having no work to do (that would be boring!), but in having bodies that never get tired! We can keep on enjoying all sorts of activities without becoming tired and sore!
. . . But first, we will have the power to mop up all the forces of evil that dominate the world and cause most of the suffering! The Bible says little about what will occur during the Millenium. It focuses on what people need to be doing now to please God.
. . . Some have said that the Millenium will be for all those who did not live long enough to make a decision for or against God (stillborn and aborted children, and those who died in childhood) to live again, and live long enough to choose or reject God. I cannot say with authority that that is true. But if it is, then our role will be to ensure that they have a safe society in which to live.
. . . The period will also serve to demonstrate what life on Earth was supposed to be like, without all sorts of evil messing things up. It will show how things work when everything is done God's way, instead of letting people go their own way. By comparison with this present age, the Millenium will demonstrate clearly that God's ways are right!
. . . The thing that concerns me most about many of the songs in the songbooks is that they focus completely on God helping us get through the hardship we face in our own personal lives. Many songs completely lack any idea of us serving God, helping him carry out his agenda. Instead, they focus completely on God helping us with our agenda. Far too many songs in the church encourage you to be obsessed with yourself and seek only your own comfort. Far too many songs consist entirely of moaning and groaning over your own suffering, with no thought of serving God or others.
. . . C.S. Lewis addressed the subject of comfort very well. He wrote that if you seek truth, you will find comfort. If you seek comfort, you will find only soft soap, and in the end, despair.
. . . Let us all make God's agenda our agenda, his goals our goals. Once you become his servant, as he has commanded (Matthew 20:25-28, Phillippians 2:3-8, and many other passages), you will find great satisfaction deep within, and many of your problems will lose their power to bother you. In fact, you will discover how foolish you have been, being upset about many of the things that bother you.
. . . Verse 1
Jesus will come down from heaven to give us
All power o'er the enemy.
In the twinkling of an eye he will change us;
We will be like him when he comes!
Immortality will be ours when we meet him
Coming in the air down from heav'n above.
Reigning on the earth we will rule forever.
Power from him above will be ours when
. . . Verse 2
Jesus will come down from heaven to give us
All power o'er the enemy.
In the twinkling of an eye he will change us;
We will be like him when he comes!
Weapons of the world won't have pow'r to harm us;
Bodies glorified can't be harmed by guns!
Biological, chemical, and nuclear
Weapons won't spoil our fun when we come with
. . . Verse 3
Jesus coming down from heaven to take his
Place here upon his throne.
At the call of the last trumpet the dead in
Christ will arise, the devil groan!
All who are alive who are in Christ Jesus
Meet him in the air as he calls his own.
Supernatural strength and pow'r he'll give to
Us, because we're his own. Then we are to
. . . Verse 4
Take hold of all those who joined the rebellion,
And followed Satan's o-r-ders;
Take them to the Lord to slay them before him,
Put them to death for all their sin!
They will nevermore do a crime, make suffer
Any little one, who is innocent.
Righteousness and love will be truly given
By glorified Christians serving Jesus
. . . Verse 5
So make sure that you can be trusted with such
Great, awesome pow'r as he will give.
His pow'r's only for the righteous and caring,
Only for those who worship him!
. . . coda
Those who will live for him
And enforce ... all of his law!
