Until 1251 The fleur-de-lys ("giglio") is the symbol of the city since its foundation (ca. 1000), maybe to stablish a connection with its Roman name, FLORENTIA. In 1251 the Ghibellins, former rulers in exile, have united under this ensign.	After 1251 The victorious Guelfs wanted to show their distance from the defeated Ghibellins, therefore inverted the colours, which perdured till nowadays
