Dear President,

 I am writing in my capacity as President of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and on behalf of this Acdemy’s Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (list of members attached) regarding the assassination of Giacomo Turra by five members of the police force of Cartagena on 4 September 1995.

 After various attempts by the colombian authorities to dimiss the case entirely, and after considerable pressure was brought to bear by the Italian government and international human rights bodies, the five policemen were finally indicted and their trial commenced on 15 December 1997.

 It wqs with great indignation that we recently learn that they have all been acquitted and we respectfully ask you to intervene with the competent authorities to ensure that the five policemen responsible for the death of Giacomo Turra be tried sentenced by and impartial court.
