Chelsea 2 - 1 Leicester - FA Premier League - 19th Apr 1997 By Beaker If the fans Love affair with Vialli ended a few weeks ago, Saturday saw the two parties enter the divorce courts! In reality, his last two home performances have justified the question "are you Furlong in disguise?" and, in my part of the ground anyway, you are more likely to catch a glimpse of Elvis Presley than hear the chant "Vialli, Vialli" His first touch poor, his finishing woeful and his commitment suspect, his was the performance of a man who no longer believes in his value to the team. The only spark we were treated too was after Mark Hughes limped off leaving Vialli to lead the line. For a fleeting moment we thought we might see a glimpse of the talents of a once great player but these hopes were soon banished and the match finished puzzlingly. Deep in injury time the bald one missed another sitter right underneath us in the East upper, Exasperated, I stood up and informed him, at the top of my voice, that he was a disgrace and not fit to wear the shirt (though in rather more "industrial" language), I am convinced he heard me! at that point the final whistle went and, without shaking hands with any of the his own or the opposition's players. he sprinted from the pitch. My hope is that he did not stop running, rather kept on going in the direction of Heathrow and ulimately Italy. Enough I say! The match overall was of poor quality, though we produced all of the really clear cut chances (most missed by you know who!) Looking at the side we put out it was worryingly familiar to that which failed abjectly against Arsenal. To start with we played in similar vein to that side as well, with the exception of Mark Hughes who battled with his usual commitment. There really wasn't much to report up till the point Heskey was put through (clearly offside!) one on one with Forest, who made a wonderful save to deny the huge Leicester forward. We were still on our feet applauding the save when the ball was swept down field and into the path of who else but Minto ( ;-)) to slot the ball calmly into the top corner. The rest of the half, and really the match, was all about Vialli's poor finishing, without which Sinclair's clinical finish from a couple of yards out (he's deadly from a yard) would have been irrelevant. I haven't seen the video evidence but it looked to be the classic "Shall I hoof it over the bar or try to turn it round the post" dilemma resulting in him doing neither. After their equaliser, Leicester seemed happy to hold onto the point (though we had a hatful of chances before Mark Hughes nodded home what proved to be the winner from an excellent deep cross by Granville (who looked comfortable at left back all afternoon) At this point Leicester decided to throw everything at us and the result was similar to the second half against the Dons. Huge ammounts of space for Zola and Vialli to exploit with every move ending with either a poor final ball or Vialli squandering the chance. In the closing seconds Parker hit the bar for Leicester and someone else had a shot cleared off the line By Leboeuf. In the end we probably deserved the points but it was far from a convincing performance with other note-worthy culprits contributing to what was, at times, a bit of a mess.
Overall : A Charitable 6 because we won though this match would have been lost were it played against better fresher opposition. |
