Chelsea 0 - 1 Blackburn - Premiership - 29th April 98
"If you don't like it, piss off."
Losing to Blackburn at home by the odd goal is irritating, especially in view of the fact that we so nearly grabbed a point right at the death with Beefy's thundering free kick against the junction of upright and crossbar, but what what makes it almost impossible to bear is the attitude of some of the people in the crowd.
The game was undersubscribed by a good 10,000 people, probably the lowest home crowd of the season, so perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised to have been more than usually aware of the sort of crap that various members of the crowd were coming out with; it was pretty quiet. Me and my mates did our best to get our section going with some really awful singing and chanting, but nobody seemed to want to know, and I don't really blame them for that.
It was potentially a nothing sort of game from the start. Only Blackburn had anything to gain, we had everything to lose by way of picking up injuries, but, as it turned out, Chelsea tried pretty hard to win, given the circumstances. It was clear that we weren't going to let Blackburn march off with it without a fight, and you'd expect nothing less from a professional football club.
Unfortunately, as the game progressed without Chelsea finding a way through Blackburn's well-organised defence, some people around us decided to ignore everything Chelsea have achieved this season by turning on the boys. Some of the comments were nothing short of pig ignorant and downright insulting, and I'm not going to repeat them here, but I'll tell you one thing: at least two of those bastards are looking at a burst mouth if I ever see them outside of that ground. Significantly, all of the moaning minnies left a good fifteen minutes before the end, no doubt to catch their trains back to Manchester. It wasn't only me who took umbrage. As one of these morons left, a bloke behind me shouted out "And don't come back" to applause all round.
We don't need people like that at the Bridge, but unfortunately there are more and more of them all the time, you can tell them from miles away. You know, the sort who fanatically supported Man U and Liverpool until our club started to achieve some success, when they suddenly realised that they'd always loved Chelsea, really. Where were you wankers when Chelsea needed you then ? Watching Man U on match of the day is where you were. If you had followed Chelsea during the grim years of the late seventies and eighties you'd realise that what we have now is something to treasure, because it may all end tomorrow. Try to support your club, not slag them just because they lose a nothing game every now and again.
It pisses me off that you Billy Bandwagons can ride on the back of Chelsea's new found success, but I suppose it's me that will have to adjust, because I'd far rather we were in our present position than having to go through the sort of grim slog that I've been enduring for the past 25 years or so, and if that means putting up with you arseholes, then that's what I'll do. It'll take more than you to end my love affair with Chelsea. Just keep out of my fucking way.
