Arsenal 0 - 5 Chelsea - Worthington Cup (4) - 11th Nov 98
Another guest report from Billy "The Bridge" Brown, who was at the game (lucky sod !)
Well now I've heard it all ! Arsenal fans singing when 5-0 down: "you only win
crap cups", just because they were taunted by Chelsea fans who were clearly
enjoying themselves (and rightly so) singing: "1, 2, 123, 1234, 5nil", and "are you
Tottenham in disguise ?".
Let me assist the Arsenal supporters, who are clearly suffering from some form
of Alzheimer's disease. These so called CRAP Cups that we have won recently have
a striking resemblance to Cups won by... yes, you got it right,
ARSEnal ! The FA Cup, League Cup and of course the UEFA Cup Winners Cup, all
Trophies won by them not that long ago (in fact only last year they won the FA Cup),
and whilst we have not won the Championship for an awful long time, we still
managed to beat the reigning European Champions, Real Madrid, to win the UEFA
Super Cup, a trophy not yet won by Arsenal. And let me remind them again: who is
the ONLY team in the British Isles to have won the UEFA CWC twice, with only 2
other teams to have achieved this (apart from Barca, who have won it 4 times) yes,
you smug little Gooner Gits: Chelsea FC.
Now the game. Without doubt, Frank Leboeuf is a genius, he was absolutely
brilliant. He rose above all in our defence to clear almost anything that came
within a 5 mile radius. His passing was nothing short of class and his penalty in the
37th minute was superbly placed. Okay, we had 4 or 5 supposed first teamers,
and poor old Arsenal had their supposed reserves, consisting of 5 players who
played against Dynamo Kiev and Manninger, who has had plenty of first team
experience. Plus of course, the FEAR of FLYING Dutchman Bergkamp. Now don't tell
me that this is an excuse for being thrashed !
We outclassed them in every
department, although during the first 20 minutes we weathered the storm, but then we were
not at home. After some great work, Poyet was clearly through, and whilst
Grimandi MAY have taken the ball first, it was a tackle from behind and Gus was the
last player on goal and had his legs taken away. The only contentious issue
here was why the freak Elleray didn't send him off. We should've had
another when Vialli was clearly brought down in the box a few minutes from 1/2 time.
The second half was somewhat more enjoyable. I still think that whilst this is
not the most important Cup, it is still an entry into Europe. Both teams looked
like they wanted to win, but were not prepared to over-commit themselves for
fear of silly injuries, but Blue Leader Luca clearly loves this competition and
leads from example. He scored 2 great goals, showing us he still has a lot to
offer in every aspect of the game. He knows how to shoot, beat a man, tackle,
pass, score goals and still finds time to have a good ol' moan at the referee.
I really can't criticise any of the players, though Duberry still gets the same
rush of blood to his head that Mad Frankie used to get, and that always worries
me, particularily against better opposition. Apart from that we were flawless.
Gus Poyet also scored 2 good goals and had a great game. I haven't really
spoken too much of the game, because I feel I need to silence those morons who keep
going on about Man Ure and ARSEnal fielding under-strength sides, conveniently
forgetting that SO DO WE, yet we still manage to score 9 goals in two rounds
against the current Champions and the current Leaders of the Premier League.
Now Arsenal have serious problems, because if this is what they have coming
through, I would be worried. Vivas is appalling and I would rather have Christopher
Robin than Christopher Wreh. The only bright prospect is Stephen Hughes, but
then he is no stranger to the first team either. Losing 5 nil at home
is a disgrace, whoever is in your team, and, but for the luck of the Irish, it
should have been 7 or 8.
If all we win this season is the League Cup I will still be happy, although I
would obviously prefer the Premier League, seconded by the Final UEFA Cup
Winners Cup, and then the FA Cup, but winning is a good habit whatever the trophy.
