BMB Rules

  • Each rider must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Each rider must be in excellent physical condition and have medical insurance.
  • Each rider must wear a helmet at all times.
  • Each rider's bike must be in excellent operating condition.
  • Entry is by preregistration only.
  • Each entrant must prepay and enclose a 3x5" color photo of him/herself with helmet on alongside the bike he/she intends to use at BMB.
  • Each rider must choose between two start times. Start times cannot be changed after registration is processed. There is a 2-hour penalty for not showing up at your designated start time.
  • Each rider must have completed the four qualifying brevets in the same year as the BMB you are entering.
  • Each rider must provide brevet certification numbers on the BMB entry form.
  • Entry forms without brevet certification numbers will not be processed.
  • Entry forms are accepted between June 1 and August 1. This allows time for brevet results to be received and posted on a website. BMB entry forms will not be accepted prior to June 1. No "space reservations" are accepted.
  • Reflective vest or reflective sash and ankle bands are mandatory at night.
  • No follow vehicles are allowed.
  • Drafting is permitted.
  • Support crews are permitted to support the rider at checkpoints only. No rider support vehicles are permitted on the rider route. Support crew may not ride a bicycle on the rider route.
  • Support vehicles must follow an alternate route. Support vehicles on the rider route will result in rider penalties. Multiple infractions of this rule results in rider disqualification.
  • Riders may only accept mechanical assistance from the BMB Tech Support Staff on the BMB route. Riders may accept other support at checkpoints.
  • BMB must be completed in 90 hours.
  • Each rider must check in and check out of every checkpoint and get his/her BMB Controle Card signed by BMB Staff. Failure to have a staff signature from each checkpoint along the BMB route will result in disqualification.
  • Each rider must comply with lighting requirements and reflective material rules for riding at night during the event.
  • Each rider must pass bike inspection at check-in Wednesday, the day before the start, at the Holiday Inn, Newton between 3:00pm and 7:00pm. Failure to pass bike inspection will result in a time penalty.
  • Each bike must be equipped with superior headlights and taillights. BMB recommends a dual headlight system, with 6-volt battery, several spare batteries, and a solid red taillight. LED lights are acceptable.
  • For lights requiring AA batteries or smaller, the rider must carry a spare set and display them at bike inspection. Lights requiring rechargable batteries are discouraged.
  • Riders may use aero-handlebars.
  • If a rider abandons, he/she is responsible to notify BMB staff by calling the closest checkpoint on the BMB Controle Card and Route Sheet.
  • Riders who abandon are responsible to find their own transportation back to the start.
  • No refunds for no shows.
  • The organizer, at his/her discretion, reserves the right to decline entry to anyone who enters after the field limit has been reached, the entry deadline has passed or who is deemed unqualified to participate.
