Match report :

Racing Genk has won the Cup for the first time in their history after winning the final against champion Club Brugge with 4-0 !! Club Brugge started the best, but couldn't really create any chances. The first chance of Genk was immediately a good one : Hendrickx could pass a few players of Club Brugge, and then put the ball aside for Oulare, who shot the ball from 25 meters into the goal. Only 1 minute later, Van der Elst lost the ball to Gudjohnsson, who could go through on goal. Verlinden stopped Gudjohnsson, but he could stop the shot of Oulare in the rebound. Topscorer Strupar was suspended for this match, so his companion Oulare had to do it himself.
Only 20 minutes had passed in the match, and Club Brugge was allready taking risks : they started playing man-on-man in the defense, to have more attacking power. The combinations of Club Brugge kept on going very well, but they didn't create any chances before the goal of Genk. The counters of Genk were much more dangerous : a shot of Gudjohnsson went into the goal, after a misunderstanding between De Brul and Verlinden. A 3-0 score at half-time : a very difficult job for champion Club Brugge in the second half-time.
Perhaps it would have been possible : after just 15 seconds played in the second half-time Fadiga set up a major opportunity for himself. He forced himself a way through the defense of Genk, but his shot just went aside the goal. If this would have gone in, the enthousiasm certainly would have returned at Club Brugge. But now, Genk kept on being dangerous on the counter. Peeters could go through (everybody was thinking of off-side), and placed the ball into the goal : 4-0. And Clement had another big chance to make it 5-0, but his shot went over the goal of Brugge.
Club Brugge deserved to score a goal, but the ball just didn't go right for them in this match.

Club Brugge - Mouscron 1-1
Germinal Ekeren - Racing Genk 2-2

Return matches : Wednesday 8 April 1998

Mouscron - Club Brugge 1-2
Racing Genk - Germinal Ekeren 0-0

The Cup Final will be played on Saturday 16 May between Racing Genk and Club Brugge, the first 2 in the Belgian league.

Club Brugge didn't have it easy at all with Mouscron. They were not able to win their home match, where Claessens could score the equalizer just before the end of the game : 1-1. In the return match Mouscron started very good as well, and they were leading 1-0 at half time. But in the second half, Brugge was able to turn things around. Substitute Fadiga was able to score 2 very beautiful goals for Brugge, which was enough to send them to the Cup Final.

Racing Genk has qualified for the Cup Final, thanks to the 2 goals on the field of Germinal. That first match was a really interesting match with offensive play from both teams. The match ended on a 2-2 score, which was a good result for Genk. The return match was much more difficult, because off the wet pitch. No goals were made there, so Genk was the deserved overall winner of this semi-final, and they could proceed to the first Cup Final in their history.
