HEDOJAR'S CLUB DAY WITH THE
CHILDREN OF BALAY PASILUNGAN UG KALAMBOAN
by: Camille Samblaceņo
Hedojar Soo Bahk Do
celebrated its 18th founding anniversary (November 9, 1987)this year with
modest yet meaningful events.Last November 5,Saturday, was a very special
day for the club members and their supportive parents. The club spent this
day teaching Soo Bahk Do to the children and adolescents of Balay
Pasilungan ug Kalamboan at Datu Bago Street, Bankerohan this city. Hedojar
club master, Kyosa Herbert Jardinel, assistant instructors, Bobby Sapar
and Sunshine Jardinel led the class which was also participated in by the
other club members, mostly children.
The session was very animated as the children were so interested and
participative in every activity. Kyosa Herbert started the session with a
short orientation of this ancient Korean art of self-defense, Soo Bahk Do
and the Hedojar club. He stressed the importance of discipline and sense
of responsibility in the art. He said that martial arts is not what many
people see in movies or on T.V.---that martial arts is silly shouting,
funny forms, weird actions, and Bruce Lee. Any form of martial arts is
first and foremost, about developing discipline and strength of character.
Hence, martial arts is basically for self-defense. This was very well
received by the children as seen by frequent nodding of their head.
Then, Kyosa Herbert proceeded to some demonstrations of punches, blocks,
kicks, and practical self-defense situations. Children club members,
Twinkle Jardinel and Danielle Marie Samblaceņo demonstrated defense
against kidnapping (with two "kidnappers")which was met by the
children with so much awe and enthusiasm. Kyosa Herbert ended the
demonstrations with a challenge to the children:"Live a disciplined
life and be a good martial artist!" Then, the children themselves got
a taste of Soo Bahk Do practice. They were taught limbering and
strengthening exercises with proper breathing; correct forms and execution
of punches, blocks, and kicks. They also learned the importance of
shouting in a Soo Bahk Do practice. Indeed they filled the practice hall
with their thundering roar! Balay Pasilungan ug Kalamboan Marianist
administrators, Fr. Pablo Rambaud, Bro. Oscar Kerketta, and the other
staff were equally delighted with the response of the children. They
eagerly tried to capture with their camera these wonderful moments of the
children.
After the practice, the club members were treated by the staff with a
hearty merienda where the children and the club members exchanged
pleasantries. Hedojar's club day with the children ended with so much joy
in the heart of the members and pride in the heart of the parents. Every
member left with a feeling of fulfilment and victory! Hedojar Soo Bahk Do
club left Balay Pasilungan ug Kalamboan , feeling like...tournament
CHAMPIONS!!!
SOO BAHK!!!
