Poems about... Gas strikers

HOW SWEET HE SCOR'D FROM MATCH TO MATCH

How sweet he scor'd from match to match
Having tasted all of defeat before,
And we, the fans of Gas beheld:
Jamie in the Blackpool sun, did score!

He'd show'd us hat-tricks, 'gainst Reading
And blushing Walsall looking slow;
He led Gas through the Millwall defence,
Where he and Jason's play did flow.

With sweet May goals the Gas were safe,
And Man City fir'd our vocal cheer;
He caught them with penalty taken,
And shut away any Gashead fear.

He loves to clap and hear us sing,
Then, laughing, sports the Macclesfield ball;
And, knowing he has the golden boot,
Ends our season for once and all.

This one is essentially about Jamie Cureton, Golden Boot of the 1998/99 season. His goals were one of the major factors in making sure the Gas stayed in Division Two. He kept his head in those crucial penalties v Blackpool and Man. City.

SONG FOR GUY

Elton John once wrote a song without words -
Song For Guy

And words are not needed to describe that goal at Layer Road
When Guy went past those two Colchester players
As if they went there.

I was standing just behind the goal when the ball hit the net -
So close I could almost touch it.

Guy ran off to the bench to celebrate,
Leaving me with the memory of that goal for ever.

Guy, you may have gone
But that goal you scored in the December sun
Will stay with me for the rest of my days.

A tribute to Guy Ipoua and that brilliant goal at Colchester!

HAYLES, BEADLE, CURETON

So you say that you can't go on
Defeat left you crying
And you say all your hope is gone
And what's the use in trying
What you need is to have some faith
Shake off those sad blues,
Get yourself a new view
Nothing is as sad as it seems you know cos
Some day you'll forget about City
Some day you'll laugh at them all
Somehow we can get through the heartbreak
Somehow we'll get through this fall
When you need to grab three points
When you need to win the match
No-one scores a load of goals
Like Hayles, Beadle, Cureton.
You think your world is over
Gasheads just remember this
No-one will heal your broken heart
Like Hayles, Beadle, Cureton.
Hayles, Beadle, Cureton.
I understand how you're feeling now
And what you've been through
But our world is going to turn around
So Gasheads don't you be blue
All it takes is a little time
To make it better
The hurt won't last forever
All your tears are all going to dry
You may be down on your luck
But Gasheads - your luck's going to change
Nothing cures a broken heart
Like Hayles, Beadle, Cureton.

This is about how our strikers would help us when we'd had a ban run - and they did! We got into the Play Offs!!!
