Holiday Norway (1998)
Photo and travel report

In the summer of 1998, we (Henry Jonker and Marcel Jonker) have been on holiday to Norway (and a part of Sweden and Denmark). From sunday 19 juli through sunday 9 august (22 days) we followed the route given in the maps above (about 5000 km). This page contains a photo and travel report of this varied holiday.

Followed route to and through Norway

On 19 juli 1998 we (Henry on the left and Marcel on the right) leave with the car full and the bikes on the back in the direction of Denmark. We leave early to avoid traffic jam on the German roads. Denmark is like the Netherlands, only with little more hills. By Kolding, Odense and the Big Belt bridge we drive to Copenhagen.

At Ishoj, about 20 km before Copenhagen, we find a camping. The next day, we make a trip by Bike to Copenhagen.

Christians Havn - Kongens Nytorv

In Copenhagen, we see a lot of parks, beautifull buildings, sculptures and of course the Little Mermaid. The Kastellet fortress looks like Boertange in the Netherlands. We cycle on the fortress wall, where we see cannons and a windmill.

Tuesday, we go to Sweden with the ferryboat from Helsingor to Helsingborg. The landscape in Sweden starts flat, but it becomes more hilly soon. Especially when we leave the highway after Göteborg towards the Vändern lake. At the east side there are multiple mountain lakes.

By car along the lakes in Sweden - Camping in Swedish forrest

Somewhere in the forrest area northeast of the Vänern, we find a nice camping place. Wednesday we drive to Norway through the forrest and we see a lot of little lakes. In Oslo we (fortunately) drive exactly right in the direction of the camping at Bogstad.

Thursday, we make a trip through Oslo. At the musea island Bigdoy, we visit the viking ship museum. We cycle through the centre along several special buildings and parks. At the bay we visit the Akerhus castle. On the way back to the camping we visit the Ulleval Stadium and see that it is getting renovated.

It is as good as impossible to leave Oslo in the Northern direction from Bogstad. After a view tries, we come back to Bogstad and we decide to take the toll road through Oslo. At Hamar, we see the Viking Skipet. We explore the sideroads between Hamar and Lillehammer where we put our tent up at an elevation next to a sand road through a forrest area.

In spite of the rain, we decide to leave at saturday. That turns out to be a good decidion, because during the travel, the weather is getting better. The road along the Trollstigveien is really beautifull. The hairpin bending road comes along several waterfalls.

On top of the mountain, there is a big field full of stacked stones. You find these ridicule tourist-made stacks of stones really everywhere in Norway. At Stranda, we take a ferryboat and at Hellesylt we take the road to the mountains. Before that, we see astonishing beautifull fjords: the Sunnylvsfjord and Geirangerfjord.

We find a nice campingplace in the mountain area. Because of the low standing eveningsun, it looks like the steaming mountains are on fire.

Sunday we go to the Jostedalsbreen. This glacier, with a length of 80 km, is the biggest on the European continent (1150 km2). The highest point is at Lodalskapa at 2083 m. At Olden we visit the Briksdalsbreen glacier. We walk till we reach the ice of the glacier.

After some rainy days, the weather is now good. The sunshine gives some special effects on the melting ice of the glacier. In the evening we find at the Utfjord a nice campingplace again. Monday 3 august we visit the Kjenndalsbreen. This glacier is less touristic than the Briksdalsbreen, but surely as beautifull and worth visiting.

In the valley next to Dalsnibba, the Djupvatnet lake (1017 m) is located. The road comes out of the snowed mountain in the background. We go further in the direction of Lomm and in Ottadalen we see a nice wild river. In Leirdalen, in the north of Jotunheimen, we find a nice campingplace.
