Last night, away and under lights, Hotel Ashburton Mid Canterbury United faced the very strong Rangers side from Christchurch, in what was their seventh match in 19 days as part of the Federation Six League.
But that did not stop Mid Canterbury from getting off to a very solid start against the side who are second in the league and had recently beaten Mid Canterbury on Anzac Day 6-0.
As expected Rangers dominated the game early, but thanks to some good defence, were unable to capitalise on their possession.
Mid Canterbury kept the pressure up and were unlucky not to score in the 28th minute, when a left foot strike from Greg Feutz was plucked out of the air from ex-All White goalkeeper Allan Stroud.
It took most of the first half before a clean cut chance was created and with that, Rangers went ahead five minutes before half-time.
Mid Canterbury started the second-half with a lot more confidence and swung onto attack, only to lack a quality last pass.
Rangers doubled its lead in the 64th minute from a goal-mouth scramble, however following the goal, the game opened up and Mid Canterbury swept onto attack regularly. The best opportunity again fell to Feutz who lobbed the ball past the stranded Rangers goalkeeper, only for it to hit the upright.
Rangers rubbed salt into Mid Canterbury's wounds when they netted a third goal, right on full-time to leave the score at 3-0.
Hotel Ashburton Mid Canterbury United now have a well earned break this weekend, due to a round of the Chatham Cup being played.
The team's next match will be on May 12 against Avon, who are just above Mid Canterbury on the points table.
