News from NZ Soccer of former Rangers player Nathan Knox:
"After leading the Scots to their third straight conference championship, Macalester midfielder Nathan Knox has been named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) 2003 Player of the Year. An All-America selection last year as a junior and three-time all-conference choice, Knox netted eight goals and assisted on two others while leading Macalester to an 8-0-2 MIAC record and 12-6-2 overall mark."

5 November 2003

The Annual General Meeting of Rangers AFC will take place at 7.30pm on Monday 17 November 2003 at the clubrooms at Eric Adam Park.

1 November 2003

Saskia Sullivan scored in the 88th minute for Mainland Soccer as they lost 1-3 at Soccer2 (Auckland/Manukau) in the National Womens League. Sara Clapham opened the scoring for the Aucklanders in the 11th minute.

12 October 2003

Rangers' Saskia Sullivan appeared as a substitute after an hour for Mainland Soccer in the National Womens League match v Central Soccer (Poverty Bay/Hawkes Bay/Manawatu/Wanganui/Taranaki) at English Park. Mainland were leading 3-2 at the time, but Central eventually won 5-3. Mainland were 3-0 ahead after 20 minutes but Central scored twice before half-time. Saskia played on the wide left and had two chances to score, one shot deflected wide, and the other failing to connect while sliding in an attempt to reach a cross at the far post. Select this link for a photo of Saskia Sullivan in the red of Mainland, taken by Kevin Clarke Photography at the game. The result sees Mainland (runners-up on goal difference last year) in last place after losing both matches so far.

7 October 2003

Finalists in Canterbury Soccer's awards include the following with Rangers connections:
Personality of the Year: Alan Stroud
Goalkeeper of the Year: Jordan Buchanan
Defender of the Year: Michael Lilley
Winners to be announced at the Canterbury Soccer awards dinner on 10 October.

28 September 2003

In the National Womens League, Mainland lost 0-1 at home to United Soccer 1 (Northland/North Harbour). In the first half Mainland's Jane Simpson was sent off for displaying her goalkeeping skills while not being the designated goalkeeper. Although the Mainland goalkeeper saved the resulting penalty, United scored the only goal of the game several minutes later. The match was played after and during pouring rain with the field covered in puddles making it almost impossible for players to complete passes. Rangers' Saskia Sullivan remained on the bench for Mainland. The result also means that United win the Challenge Cup from Mainland.

26 September 2003

Mainland Soccer retained the Gordon Cup with a 3-3 draw with Capital Soccer. Rangers' Deane Hutchinson, captaining the Mainland side, scored two first half goals (before being substituted in first half stoppage time due to injury). Rupert Ryan scored a second-half hat-trick for Capital, but Mainland had scored their third after Ryan's second goal, so were never behind on the scoreboard. Jordan Buchanan and Michael Lilley were the other Rangers players to appear on the field for Mainland during the match.

The Mainland Soccer senior mens squad, as reported by The Press, to play Capital Soccer in tonight's Gordon Cup match (English Park, 7pm), includes the following Rangers players: Jordan Buchanan, Michael Lilley, Deane Hutchinson (captain) and Russell Kamo. John Brown is the coach. Chris Peck is out due to injury.

24 September 2003

Rangers' Saskia Sullivan has been named in the Mainland Soccer squad (published today on the NZ Soccer website) for the National Womens League that begins this weekend. Former Rangers players in the squad include: Alana Gunn, Clare Warner, Tina Bosscher and Aimee O'Malley. Mainland's first match in the National Womens League is at English Park against United Soccer 1 (North Harbour/Northland) on Sunday 28 September, 2.00pm kick off. Meanewhile former Rangers player Sara Clapham has been named in the Soccer2 (Auckland/Manakau) squad for the competition.

20 September 2003

Canterbury retains the Jones Cup with a 0-0 draw with Otago in Dunedin. Rangers players in the Canterbury side included Chris Peck and Russel Kamo.
Select this link for match report and photos on the Soccer Otago site.
Mainland Soccer will play Capital Soccer for the Gordon Cup at English Park on Friday evening (7.00pm kickoff).

16 September 2003

Rangers Masters Competitive team added the Knock-Out Cup to go with their League title won earlier this season. Rangers beat New Brighton 4-2 in the Final at English Park. Leading 3-1 at half-time, Rangers weathered the second half storm (playing into the wind and heavy rain), with Luke Campfens scoring a penalty to make it 4-1 before Brighton got a consolation goal. Afterwards Halswell beat Christchurch United 1-0 in the English Cup Final.

13 September 2003

A good day for Technical as they beat Cashmere Wanderers 3-1 to win the Mainland Premier League promotion playoff 4-3 on aggregate. Technical promoted to Mainland Premier League for 2004 season, Cashmere Wanderers relegated to Canterbury League.

6 September 2003

A bad day for Technical as they lost their Masters Competitive Knock-Out Semi-Final 2-1 to Rangers with Chris Smith scoring a late headed winner. Rangers will play New Brighton (4-2 winners over Halswell) in the Final. In a friendly curtain raiser at Eric Adam Park, Technical's Presidents B side lost 5-2 to Rangers Bee (from Presidents C). Meanwhile at English Park, in the first leg of the Mainland Premier League promotion/relegation playoff, Cashmere Wanderers beat Technical 2-1.

In the Junior Knock-Outs: 14th Grade Sction 3 Final: Rangers 4 St Bedes College 3, however there were losses for Rangers in the Finals of 11th Grade Section 4, and 12th Grade Girls.

30 August 2003

A golden goal penalty saw Rangers beat Cashmere Wanderers 4-3 in the Masters Competitive Cup Quarter-Final. In the Reserve Cup Semi-Final, Rangers who finished second on goal difference in the league to Halswell United, lost 5-2 to Halswell at Eric Adam Park after leading 2-0 (goals to Paul Stanley and a Terry Downes drive that the Halswell keeper diverted into his own net) until a minute before half-time, when Halswell pulled one back. Within five minutes of the restart Halswell had made it 3-2, and with Rangers' Andy Barlow sent off for "two bookable offences" there was no way back for Rangers as the match turned very niggly. In Presidents C Cup Semi-Final, Rangers Dipsticks lost 6-2 at Halswell. In an intra-club friendly match the Rangers Bee side from Presidents C drew 1-1 with Rangers Division 4. However the Bees are claiming a 2-0 victory for an ineligle player, as Div 4 fielded Adam Styles (under suspension following Wednesday night?) :-).

29 August 2003

Nathan Knox, at Rangers earlier this season, scored the only goal of the game in Macalester College's (USA) 1-0 win in their season opener against Wisconsin-Whitewater. Macalester will play in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

27 August 2003

On a rainy night at English Park, Rangers (although playing 10 v 11 for an hour and a quarter) dominated Mainland Premier League champions Nomads but couldn't find the finishing touch in the English Cup first round. In the second minute of the second half of 'golden goal' extra time a Nomads player won a one-on-one with Rangers keeper Jordan Buchanan (who had stopped everything that had come his way prior) and slipped past him, to steer the ball into the net from a wide angle to send Nomads into the quarter-final with the only goal of the game. But the main feature of the match was the sending off of Rangers' striker Adam Styles for "two bookable offences". The pink slip disciplinary sheets are awaited to shed some light as to what the referee thought merited pulling out the yellow card in both instances (the first after 27 minutes; the second 7 minutes later). Six minutes after the sending off, Russel Kamo (recently transferred back from Wellington Olympic) curled a shot onto the top of the crossbar with the Nomads keeper well-beaten. Rangers created the best chances in the second half with a display of passion and determination that could hardly be faulted. Nomads despite their man advantage rarely threatened and the back four of Blair Harkerss, Michael Lilley, Gavin Jeffs and Paul Hughes were solid. Will Owen provided his usual grit in defensive midfield. Steve Anngow harassed the Nomads defence with a lot of running until he was replaced by Terry Downes midway through the second half. Chris Peck was unlucky to see the ball trickle away from his feet when one-on-one with the Nomads keeper after 72 minutes. Deane Hutchinson forced an extra-time save from the Nomads keeper with a long range dipping shot. Also in extra-time, Terry Downes from a corner reached the ball near the goal line but couldn't direct his powerful header into the goal... Cruel and harsh, we hit the crossbar, Adam Styles can be viewed as being very unlucky... Unimount went on to win the Chatham Cup; Nomads must now fancy their chances of winning the English Cup.

Nic Longley, who played 91 matches for Rangers AFC 1995-97, has been named in the Colin Tuaa coached "lower North Island" selection to play against the Football Kingz in Wanganui this weekend. Longley, who captained Miramar to the National League title in 2002, hasn't played a lot recently due to his heavy work commitments at Wellington Hospital, but has made himself available for this match.

The Rangers AFC Senior Prizegiving due to be held on 6 September has been cancelled "due to a general lack of interest".

24 August 2003

A 61st minute goal by Gavin Jeffs provided Rangers with a 1-0 win at Nelson Suburbs, giving Rangers third place in the final standings of the Mainland Premier League. Rangers finish on 31 points, 4 points behind second-placed Halswell and one point further back from champions Nomads.
Select this link for match report from the Nelson Mail

23 August 2003

Nomads United win the Mainland Premier League, beating Western 4-0, meaning that Western were unable to overtake Rangers for fourth place. Rangers can finish third (above Ferrymead Bays, but behind Halswell) by beating Nelson Suburbs away tomorrow.

In the knock-outs, Reserves (7-2 v Avon) and Dipsticks (4-2 v Woolston) progress to semi-finals. Snows' Division 2 side concede a last minute equalising penalty to send their quarter-final v Hornby into golden goal extra time. Hornby winning 4-3, getting the golden goal to knock Snows out. Rangers Bee also knocked out, at Presidents C quarter-final stage. Masters A have qualified for their quarter-final.

17 August 2003

In the Chatham Cup Final, University-Mt Wellington (who squeaked past Rangers by a coat of paint in the quarter-final) beat Melville United 3-1. Melville was captained by Gavin Douglas who made 20 appearances for Rangers reserve team in 1997.

In the Uncle Toby's National Womens Knock-Out Cup Final, Lynn-Avon United beat Ellerslie 4-1 with a hat-trick from Sara Clapham (19 appearances, 17 goals for Rangers women first team in the year 2000).

16 August 2003

Despite Bays and Nomads drawing, Rangers chances of winning the 2003 Mainland Premier League were delivered a fatal blow, being held to a 0-0 draw by bottom of the table Cashmere Wanderers (whose goalkeeper was praised). Rangers can finish 3rd or 4th depending on the outcome of next weekends game in Nelson. Nomads await in the first round of the English Cup on August 27.

Reserves, Division 2 (by default), and both Presidents C teams all qualify for quarter-finals of their knock-outs. Division 4 knocked out. Ask Canterbury Soccer what the situation is with Masters Competitive who either won by default (over Avon) in their first round or (as was later suggested) were supposed to play their last league match at Bays.

10 August 2003

In Mainland Premier League, Nelson Suburbs upset Nomads, winning 2-0. This result leaves Rangers title hopes alive - barely. Rangers need Halswell and Nomads to lose their remaining games.

9 August 2003

Rangers remain 4th in Mainland Premier League being held to a 1-1 draw by Western.

5 August 2003

Rangers' challenge for the Mainland Premier League title took a major blow with a 2-1 loss to Ferrymead Bays. Just after the hour mark Adam Styles was clipped just inside the Bays half, referee Ian Walker (who had a "busy" match) waved play on for 'advantage' but the ball went straight out for a Bays throw, with Styles (whose run and break had been impeded) expecting a free-kick. From the bays throw-in, Will Owen found himself booked with a challenge that could only result in a free-kick just inside the Rangers half. The ball was swung in and Bays' Neil Murphy scored with a spectacular overhead kick. Five minutes later Rangers' captain Gavin Jeffs was shown two yellow cards in very quick succession and was sent off. Both sides created many chances during the game and Andrew Ellis hit the post for Rangers. With ninety minutes having expired and into stoppage time, Rangers were awarded a free-kick just outside the Bays penalty area towards the right hand side of the field. Jacobo Egues curled a shot into the roof of the net to equalise for Rangers (with Rangers' 200th goal in the Federation 6/Mainland Premier League). But within thirty seconds Bays scored the winner. With many players free in the penalty area, a Bays' Eli Doornenbaal shot found the back of the net.
The top 6 now looks like this (played [out of 18]; points):
Nomads: 15; 32
Bays:       16; 29
Halswell: 16; 29
Rangers: 15; 26
Western: 16; 25
Brighton: 16; 22

2 August 2003

Rangers move to fourth in Mainland Premier League with Andrew Ellis scoring twice as Rangers win 2-0 at New Brighton. That takes Rangers above Western, who lost 3-0 to Ferrymead Bays. Rangers play Ferrymead Bays (level on points, Rangers with a game in hand) at Eric Adam Park, this Tuesday 5 August, 7.00pm kick off. Rangers are three points, with 2 games in hand, behind Halswell (who lost 3-1 to Nelson), and 6 points, with one game in hand, behind league leaders Nomads.

Division 2 and Masters A are both claiming to have won their respective league championships, with 5-0 wins over New Brighton and Technical respectively (in Division 2, Burnside A lost 5-2 to Hornby). Reserves and Rangers Bee (Presidents C) both have to rely on combinations of unlikely results of future matches involving other clubs in order to win their leagues.

University-Mt Wellington, who squeaked past Rangers in the Chatham Cup quarter-finals, have won 3-2 aet at Lower Hutt City in the semi-finals, to qualify for the Final.

27 July 2003

Rangers drop to fifth (with games in hand) in Mainland Premier League after Western beat Nelson Suburbs 2-1.

26 July 2003

Rangers draw 3-3 with Avon United in the Mainland Premier League. Penalties to Deane Hutchinson and Jacobo Egues, plus a goal from Andrew Ellis. Reserves win 6-0 over Avon, Division 2 held 0-0 by Western. In Presidents C, Rangers Bee beat Rangers Dipsticks 3-2.

20 July 2003

Midway through the second half, Adam Styles, with only the goalkeeper to beat, chipped the ball onto the crossbar, the ball bounced down into the field of play rather than across the goal-line and the Mount immediately (within 10 seconds) broke downfield to score the only goal of the game, to send Rangers out of the Chatham Cup at the quarter-final stage. Even University-Mount Wellington coach Lee Root described it as being a "little bit fortunate" in his speech at the aftermatch function. Unimount played well in the opening stages, but Rangers came back strongly in the latter part of the first half and could have gone into half-time ahead, but for a Tamati Williams save from a Jacobo Egues shot, plus Will Owen and Paul Stanley both went for the ball following an Adam Styles across-the-goal header, with the ball popping harmlessly away. The Mount had the wind behind them in the second half, and after the goal was scored, Rangers seemed to lack a little self-belief, and weren't able to score an equaliser. There was no lack of passion or desire in the match, and Rangers can lay claim to being the top club in the South Island and be proud that this year's Chatham Cup run equals the 1993 effort of five consecutive wins in Chatham Cup games (a club record in modern times).

More bad news as Nomads United score a last-minute winner to beat Nelson Suburbs 2-1 in Mainland Premier League.

19 July 2003

With Rangers match against Ferrymead Bays in the Mainland Premier League being deferred due to the Chatham Cup, upsets in other League matches mean that Rangers remain 4th with up to 2 matches in hand over teams above. Nelson beat Brighton 2-0; Avon beat Nomads 2-1; Halswell and Chch United drew 2-2; and Western only managed a 1-0 win over Cashmere.

Reminder: Tomorrow, Sunday 20 July, Chatham Cup Quarter-Final, Rangers v University-Mt Wellington, Eric Adam Park, 2.00pm.
Select this link for Chatham Cup Quarter-Final Preview in The Press, focussing on Alan Stroud.

13 July 2003

Rangers are through to the quarter-finals of the Chatham Cup after beating Roslyn Wakari 2-1 after extra time in Round 4. Roslyn scored just after the ten minute mark, when one of their (consistently awful) corners ended up midway in the Rangers half, but a magnificent long distance drive flashed past Alan Stroud and into the roof of the net to give Roslyn a 1-0 lead, which they tried to hold onto as Rangers poured forward (especially in the second half). Adam Styles should have had a hat-trick but somehow failed to score, Andrew Ellis let the ball go between his legs rather than slotting it into the net and Deane Hutchinson failed to connect properly with a couple of shots. The Roslyn keeper had to scramble in the first-half to keep a headed back-pass from crossing the line and pulled off several close saves, as well as seeing a shot cleared off his line by a defender. Just as it looked like it was going to be one of those games, where whatever was tried, Rangers wouldn't score, Paul Hughes rose at a corner to head home a vital Chatham Cup goal with ten minutes left. Seven minutes into golden-goal extra time, and a Jacobo Egues cross befuddles the goalkeeper and the ball is in the goal, and Rangers are through to a quarter-final match-up with University Mount Wellington, at Eric Adam Park, next Sunday, 2.00pm. Be there!

12 July 2003

With this weekend's Chatham Cup tie meaning Rangers match at Nelson Suburbs in Mainland Premier League being deferred, Rangers drop to 4th in the League after Nomads beat Halswell 1-0 and Ferrymead Bays beat Avon 4-0. Rangers are three points off leaders Halswel with a game in hand, one point behind Nomads (who have a game in hand), and level on points with Bays (Rangers have a game in hand over Bays).

Reserves, Division 4, both Masters teams all win. Division 2 held to a 3-3 draw at Hornby. In Presidents C, Rangers Bee won 3-2 at Universities despite Joe Kearns missing a penalty for Rangers (he scored from the rebound though).

7 July 2003

The winner of this Sunday's (13 July, 2.00pm, Eric Adam Park) Chatham Cup Round 4 tie bewteen Rangers and Roslyn Wakari have been drawn at home to University-Mount Wellington in the Quarter-Final to be played the weekend of 19/20 July.

1 July 2003

Rangers are through to Round 4 of the Chatham Cup, beating Halswell United 2-1 at English Park in Round 3. As the non-National League Canterbury side that has progressed the furtherest in the Chatham Cup this season, Rangers have been presented with the Macfarlane Cup. Rangers will now play at home to either Caversham or Roslyn Wakari in Round 4 (the Dunedin sides meet on the weekend) to be playeed on the weekend of 12/13 July. Nathan Knox opened the scoring for Rangers in the 37th minute of a game played in wet conditions. Despite the slippery ground, Rangers played some nice football and should have taken more chances before Halswell scored in the 79th minute from a corner. But in injury time Adam Styles finished the game off for Rangers. A great effort and deserved win.

28 June 2003

Rangers made up ground on Halswell (who were beaten 2-1 by Western) at the top of the Mainland Premier League after winning 2-1 at Christchurch United. Nomads beat third place New Brighton, but Nomads have two games in hand. Reserves beat Christchurch United 10-1, Division 2 have their first loss of the season, 0-2 at Avon United White. Good results in top of the table clashes for Rangers Bee (Presidents C) and both Masters sides.

Excerpt of report from Mainland Soccer of the Premier League match:
"Rangers prepared for their Bluebird Chatham Cup clash against Halswell coming up this Tuesday night with a 2-1 win over Christchurch United at QEII no. 2 field. Rangers' goals came from Paul Hughes from a free kick after 25 minutes and Paul Stanley in the 50th minute. Steve Hill grabbed one back for United midway through the second spell but United couldn't break down the Rangers defence again despite their best efforts. Rangers stay in second spot just three points away from Halswell."

23 June 2003

The Chatham Cup draw as announced by Terry Blacktopp on Radio Sport tonight has Rangers away to Halswell United in the third round, to be played at English Park at 7pm on Tuesday 1 July. The other third round tie in the Southern Region sees Caversham play Roslyn Wakari on 5 July. In the fourth round (12/13 July) the winner of the Halswell v Rangers tie is at home to the winner of the Dunedin tie, although Blacktopp is threatening to schedule the fourth round tie to be played in Timaru.

22 June 2003

In the Chatham Cup, Rangers win 2-1 at Nelson Suburbs with goals to Nathan Knox and Paul Stanley. The draw for the next round wil be announced between 8.00pm and 8.30pm on Radio Sport on Monday 23 June.

17 June 2003

In the supplementary round of the Chatham Cup, Halswell United beat Western 2-0 at English Park. According to Mainland Soccer, Halswell will now face the winner of the Nelson Suburbs v Rangers tie (Sunday 22 June, Saxton Field, Stoke, 1.00pm) in the next round.

14 June 2003

In the Mainland Premier League, Rangers remain second but lost ground on leaders Halswell, by losing 3-1 at Nomads. Mainland Soccer had this to report about the match:
"In a match of many chances Nomads took theirs and Rangers squandered theirs as the home side won out 3-1 at Tulett Park. Rangers opened the scoring in the 2nd minute when a Chris Peck free kick snuck inside the far post without anyone getting the touch that Nomads keeper James Devlin expected. The best chances for the remainder of the half came Nomads way, which they took one in the 37th minute when Greg Feutz scored to level the game at half time. Nomads struck twice just after the restart with firstly Feutz chipping Jordan Buchanan in the Rangers' goal then Karl Thorns following up a shot from Craig Squire to push the ball into an empty net to give Nomads the advantage. Rangers piled on the pressure in the final 15 minutes attempting to get back into the match and did look as if they had scored in the 75th minute only for the match officials to rule the ball hadn't crossed the goal-line."

The Rangers teams in all other senior grades (apart from Division 4) won their matches.

11 June 2003

At the Canterbury United awards night, Michael Lilley was named Canterbury United's Player's Player of the Year and Defender of the Year.

7 June 2003

Halswell United overtook Rangers at the top of the Minaland Premier League winning 4-2 at Eric Adam Park. Paul Stanley scored both Rangers' goals (one penalty), as well as heading one into the Rangers net. Division 2, Division 4, both Presidents sides, and Masters Competitive all had wins, and the Reserves drew 1-1 with Halswell.

2 June 2003

The draw for the next round of the Chatham Cup, as announced this evening on Radio Sport has Rangers away at Nelson Suburbs. Nine of Rangers' last ten (and 12 of the last 15) Chatham Cup ties (including the forthcoming Nelson Suburbs game) have been away games.

In Round 2 of the Chatham Cup, an Andrew Ellis header in the third minute of extra time was the 'golden goal' that gave Rangers a 2-1 victory at Ferrymead Bays. Rangers were behind after 10 minutes of the start of the game, but Deane Hutchinson finished well from an Adam Styles run to equalise 10 minutes later. After that Bays found their shots on goal blocked by Alan Stroud, while Rangers struggled to put in accurate crosses once in behind the Bays defence. The draw for the next round will be announced on Radio Sport at approx 8.15pm tonight.

31 May 2003

Rangers go back to the top of the Mainland Premier League after a 2-2 draw (Rangers goals credited to Chris Peck and Nathan Wood) at Western. Halswell (who lost 3-0 to Ferrymead Bays) are second, level on points but behind Rangers on goals scored.

In Masters Competitive, Rangers win 3-1 over Technical.

30 May 2003

NZ Soccer has posted an amended Chatham Cup Round Two draw on its website. Rangers are away to Ferrymead Bays on Monday 2 June at Barnett Park (2.00pm kick-off). The winners will not necessarily be playing Dunedin Technical in their next cup game. In the Southern Region (including Mainland) there will also be a "supplementary round" to be played "before Round 3 on June 22nd". The draw is to be announced on Radio Sport, Monday 2 June, 8.15pm.

25 May 2003

Rangers drop to second in Mainland Premier League, after Halswell win 5-1 at Nelson Suburbs.

A Deane Hutchinson goal helped Canterbury United to a 2-2 draw at Dunedin Technical in the National League. With Napier City Rovers beating Miramar, the result had no bearing on qualification for the semi-finals, with Canterbury United finishing 6th in the League.

24 May 2003

He coached Rangers 1973-76, 1978-80, 1982-83. During those times Rangers won 3 Southern League Championships, and were runners-up twice. In 1980 Rangers finished 9th (out of 12 teams) in the National League. He went on to coach both Christchurch United and Christchurch City in the National League, winning 2 National League titles with United. 21 April 2003

Rangers beat Cashmere Wanderers 2-1 at Beckenham in the Mainland Premier League to move above the Wanderers in the table. Gavin Jeffs scored at both the beginning and end of the first half, with Cashmere scoring with three minutes left in the game. Rangers dominated and should have made more of their opportunities with Jacobo Egues, Deane Hutchinson, Mike Harvey and Gavin Jeffs all coming close to increasing the scoreline.

19 April 2003

An early goal to Adam Styles and one later on by Jacobo Egues gave Rangers a 2-0 win over Christchurch United at Eric Adam Park to lift the home side to 7th in the League (but only 4 points behind leaders Avon and Halswell). Rangers featured Jordan Buchanan in goal, who despite saving a penalty yesterday for Canterbury United against Caversham was feeling a little deflated after Canterbury's 3-0 loss.

The Reserves (with Blair Harkerss in goal) beat Christchurch United 3-1, with Andrew Steel scoring one penalty but missing one later on. Division 2 and Presidents Bee (Mark Shepherd: 4 goals in 3 games!) continued their top of the table form, with both winning at Cuthberts. Masters A remain top (Tech lost last week, but tried not to tell anyone) of Masters Competitive - there are no Masters League matches this weekend.

12 April 2003

Rangers lose 2-3 to Nomads in Mainland Premier League and after two games are 9th. First half goals to Jacabo Egues and Pachalo Chinula, meant the half-time score was 2-2, but Nomads went in to claim their third consecutive victory over Rangers at Eric Adam Park. Reserves had their first win of the season, 3-1 v Nomads. Division 2 (3-1 v Avon Green), Presidents Bee (2-1 v Avon), and Masters Competitive (5-0 v Avon) are all on 2-match winning streaks this season.

5 April 2003

Rangers made an unsuccessful start to the Mainland Premier League, losing 3-1 at Halswell United, Mike Harvey scoring for Rangers. Reserves also lost, 4-0, at Halswell, but Division 4 had a 3-0 win there. Division 2, who are the defending champions of their grade beat Burnside B 5-1, the Presidents grade sides made winning starts too, with Rangers Bee coming from 0-1 down to beat Papanui-Redwood 2-1 (goals to Mark Shepehrd and Joe Kearns), and the Dipsticks disposing of Nomads 5-0. In Masters Social, the Spikes lost 2-3 to Ferrymead Bays Blue.

Russell Kamo, who recently moved from Rangers to Wellington Olympic scored the only goal of Olympic's opening match in the Capital Premier League against Waterside Karori.

23 March 2003

Canterbury United beat Dunedin Technical 2-0 at English Park in the National League. Rangers' Jordan Buchanan played for United and Deane Hutchinson appeeared as a substitute with 8 minutes remaining, setting up United's second goal in the last minute. Alan Stroud and Jacobo Egues were unused substitutes. In the National Youth League, Mainland Soccer U20's beat the New Zealand U17 Academy 2-1 and finish second in the League (despite being undefeated). Rangers' Scott Hawker played for Mainland but was substituted early in the second half after being injured.

19 March 2003

With low-flying aeroplanes seemingly more in danger of being hit by the ball than either goalnet, and with Alan Stroud making several good saves for Rangers, it was going to take something spectacular to win the Rangers Tournament Final, and Glen Squires of Nomads did just that with a long, long range powerful strike for Nomads in the 78th minute, as Nomads won the Rangers Tournament for their first time, beating the hosts 1-0 in the Final. Rangers started Jacabo Egues on the left in place of Tony Wilson [and his red boots] (who came on as a second half sub), and Paul Stanley had a couple of shots that, possibly someone more used to playing as a striker may have put on target. With the final move of the game, Jacabo Egues was challenged in the Nomads area, but instead of whistling for what many thought should have been a penalty to Rangers, the referee blew for full-time. In the third-place match Halswell United beat Christchurch United 2-1, with Andy Daffin opening the scoring, before Christchurch United equalised right on half-time. Halswell scored the winner through Jimmy Farrington with a couple of minutes remaining.

16 March 2003

In the 9th minute of sudden death extra time, a shot from Rangers' Gavin Jeffs flew just above everyones' heads and dipped down underneath the Halswell crossbar to give Rangers a 2-1 win over Halswell in the semi-final of the Rangers Tournament. Five minutes after Halswell had taken the lead in the 75th minute, Paul Stanley (who played in a striker's position) scored his first goal for Rangers with a penalty to equalise, following a blatant push from the Halswell goalkeeper. Rangers played well to stop Halswell from establishing the quick short-passing game that they displayed in the group stage, with Willie Dennett returning to Rangers (following a season at Rangiora) putting in a solid performance at right back. Rangers will play Nomads United in the Final at Eric Adam Park on Wednesday 19 March at 8pm, after Nomads overwhelmed Christchurch United in the second half to win 5-1 (halftime score 1-1) in the other semi-final.

5 March 2003

Rangers will play Halswell United in the semi-finals of the Rangers Tournament (on Sunday 16 March, 1pm kick-off) after finishing runners-up in Group A, with a 0-0 draw with Ferrymead Bays (who finished third). Rangers and Bays are level on points and goal difference, but Rangers qualify due to net run rate, Rangers having run the ball into the net more times during the group stage than Bays. With Gavin Jeffs moving into the back-line, and Will Owen starting in midfield, Rangers defended well against Bays, although Alan Stroud was called on to make some important saves. Just after the half hour mark, a Paul Hughes cross hit the bar for Rangers, and in the first half both sides squandered chances with Rangers best ones falling to Nathan Wood (failing to hit the target from a couple of yards out), and a Russell Kamo cross/shot whizzing across the face of the goal and out for a throw-in. In the second half Bays hit the post, but the AR had his flag up so there was no chance from the resulting rebound. In the Group B match, Halswell beat Western 4-1, with two first-half goals to Andy Daffin, before Western scored a penalty in the last minute of the half. Ben Light added 2 goals in the second half. The result sees Halswell finish top of Group B, Western eliminated (oh dear, how sad, never mind), and the second place to be decided by the result of Cashmere v Christchurch United next Wednesday.

26 February 2003

Adam Styles scored the 250th goal by a Rangers team in the history of the Rangers Tournament, with a header in second-half injury time as Rangers lost 1-2 to Nomads in a match where Rangers played as awful as Nomads did well. Styles also hit the post in the 12th minute but Nomads opened the scoring around the half-hour mark and scored again just after half-time, to take the lead in Group A ahead of Rangers. The winner of the sweepstake, for the minute that referee Ian Walker cautioned Paul Stanley, was number 46 :-)

23 February 2003

Rangers go top of Group A of the Rangers Tournament with a comfortable 2-0 win over New Brighton. Captain Mike Harvey opened the scoring on 4 minutes heading home at close range from a Nathan Wood cross from a short corner. Steve Anngow made it 2-0, 4 minutes after the interval, with a dipping 20-yard half-volley that flew over the Brighton keeper's head and into the goal. New Brighton never really threatened the Rangers goal. The game also featured a Rangers debut for Paul Stanley and the return of Paul Hughes.
Rangers line-up:
Alan Stroud; Nick Buchanan, Mike Harvey, Paul Stanley, Tony Wilson (Dean Bodger 72), Adam Styles, Gavin Jeffs [booked 80], Nathan Wood (Craig Hinton 59), Pachalo Chinula, Michael Hughes (Andrew Steel 80), Steve Anngow (Paul Hughes 59).

19 February 2003

After twenty seconds of the Rangers Tournament, Nomads led Ferrymead Bays 1-0, a scoreline that remained that way until full-time. In the later match Christchurch United drew 2-2 with Halswell. Chch Utd scored just before half-time, with Scott Webster equalising for Halswell in the opening minutes of the second half. Chch Utd again took the lead with 10 minutes remaining, but Halswell again equalised with five minutes left.

16 February 2003

Canterbury United beat Caversham 4-1 in the National League with Jordan Buchanan playing a full game, Chris Peck appearing as a half-time substitute, Deane Hutchinson playing the last twenty minutes and Jacabo Egues coming on during the last ten minutes for Canterbury United, who also featured Adam Styles and Alan Stroud on the bench as other potential impact players. Caversham used former Rangers player Camden Howitt during the last ten minutes. In the National Youth League, Russell Kamo contributed a full game to Mainland's 3-0 win over Southern Federation, as Mainland go top of the League.

9 February 2003

Rangers' Deane Hutchinson scored two second half goals (described as "brilliant" by New Zealand Soccer's website) for Canterbury United as they lost 2-3 away to East Auckland in the National League.

In the National Youth League, Rangers' Russell Kamo scored Mainland Soccer U20's second goal in the 6-0 win over Central Federation U20 at English Park. Kamo's goal came after a Ben Light cross was touched on by the Central keeper's fingertips to Kamo at the far post, he then blasted it home. Kamo was also involved in the play leading up to several other of the Mainland goals. He started the game as a striker but dropped deeper in the second half, playing as an attacking midfielder behind the two strikers.

6 February 2003

Late goals to Nathan Knox and Jamie Duncan, both with assists from Rangers' Deane Hutchinson (who appeared as a half-time substitute), gave Canterbury United a 2-0 win over Tauranga City United in the National League at English Park. Jordan Buchanan played a full game and Chris Peck appeared in the 86th minute as a sub for Knox. Alan Stroud was an unused substitute.
