This season has been a mixed one for the club. Last year we recognised the incredible contribution Eric Adam (Mr Rangers) had made to the club over many years. Sadly, Eric passed away in December. Typically he maintained his passion for the club right through his illness. The club suffered a further loss when Ivan Penrose, our groundsman, caretaker and "Mr Fixit" for nearly 10 years also passed away. Ivan was a quiet achiever who did things with a minimum of fuss, normally before anyone realised they needed doing. On behalf of the club, I extend our sincere condolences to both families.
On the football front it was a season of consolidation with some pleasing but not spectacular results. The men's 1st and 2nd teams performed credibly and with so many young players, provide a sound base for us to achieve real success. In 2000 we fielded 3 womens teams. A special welcome to all those new to the club who contributed to a year which we hope shows the future strength of our womens section. Once again our Junior teams acquitted themselves well throughout the grades.
This year, your committee started a process of considering the future direction of the club. We will continue this process this year and hope to have a substantive proposal to bring to the club as a whole for consideration in 2001. It is gratifying to note that we will be able to consider this from a position of strength, in terms of both player numbers and financial condition.
I have decided that the time is right for me to stand aside and let others take the club through this next phase of its existence. I have enjoyed the past 4 years as chairman (just as I have enjoyed the last 23 seasons playing in the Spikes), and truly appreciate the amazing level of commitment and co-operation from so many people which come together to make Rangers the great club it is. Thank you to one and all.
I look forward to supporting the new committee as they take the club forward and urge you all to look for opportunities to help out. Don't sit back and wait to be asked - you might miss the chance to make your contribution.
Finally, thanks to everyone who contributed to Rangers in 2000; our sponsors, adidas through Murray Smith at Canterbury Sports Depot, Grant Chellew at Wyatt & Wilson Print, Ferrymead Bar & Restaurant and all those other organisations which provide sponsorship. Thanks also to the coaches and managers who get our teams out on the park every week, the supporters that get in behind them each week, committee members, those who help out in different ways around the club.
