Chairman's Report 2001
This year saw another successful one for the club, both on and off the field, with a club spirit and culture that is very positive.
In the men's division we fielded another team, had two teams win their league undefeated and two teams finish second.
In the women's divisions, we lost a team but had a strong year.
The juniors go from strength to strength with a record number of boys and girls achieving Representative and New Zealand honours.
Playing Highlights
- Alan Stroud showing there is plenty of fuel left in the tank, picking up Canterbury Soccer's Goalkeeper of the Year award and putting in a number of appearances at National League level.
- Federation 6 Premier League team, under the capable guidance of Colin Curry and Malcolm Knox, finished second in the League, 3 points behind the winners.
- The Federation 6 Reserve team, while struggling for numbers at then end of the season, finished second in their league.
- Mens League Division Two (Snow's team) won their League and won their knock-out Cup, undefeated for the season.
- Mens Masters White, playing in the 'A' division, also did the double, winning every game, including the struggle against Rangers Purple.
- Womens 1st Division players collected at the CWFA Awards:
- Tina Bosscher - Defender of the Year
- Leigh Alexander - Youth Player of the Year
- The Spikes finished another season with no major injuries.
We are heading into a new season with the Mens coaching structure in place. Off the field, we are financially strong, but still compounded with a lot of work falling on too few people.
There are a number of key people that deserve special mention and thanks:
- to all coaches and managers throughout all divisions.
- Frank Klomp for a dedicated, thorough job well done as Treasurer which only just surpasses his role as a central defender.
- Lee Hawkey for everything from Womens Liaison and Manager to Uniform and Playing Strip and the club in general.
- Ric and Reta for another excellent performance in Housie, the Bar, the Shop and the 5-a-side Tournament.
- Ed Heald and Bryan Ives for looking after the grounds.
- Ged Killick in his first year as Club Captain, for looking after gear and providing a strong liaison with the First Team squad.
- Ron Griffiths for social activities.
- Phil Clayton for an excellent website.
- Terry Marsh, Jackie Snowdon and the rest of the Junior Committee for a fantastic year of junior football.
- Alan Smythe for complying with the Gaming Licence demands.
- Fred Simpson for continuing to think of the club through all his other activities.
- and to every member who paid their subscriptions on time, took their turn in washing gear, turned up at the clubrooms, and promised to stand on the executive next year, a big thank you.
Strategically, we have made the move to being associated with Linfield Sports, with a lot of work to be done in the next year to bring this relationship closer. We have also voted in favour of the Team Canterbury entry into the National League.
A big thanks to all sponsors:
My challenge to all for the new season is for each team to not think what they want but to contribute as much as the Spikes do.
Thanks to all for a fantastic year, we look forward to an even better 2002. My time will be under pressure as I am also on the Board of Linfield Sports and Team Canterbury, but Rangers will never be undervalued.
