Following on from the previous season, this was again a season of highs and lows. We had a good cup run, and were certainly well travelled. We again introduced some new players to the club senior teams, but failed to show the consistency needed to take out any honours.
Our main focus was, of course, the Federation league, a competition that was a step up from the last two years. A final position of fourth was ultimately disappointing as we showed again our potential by sharing the points with the three teams who finished above us. However, if we are to improve on this, we must now start to show even more commitment to our jobs on the training and playing fields and ensure that we put those below us away more competently. It was a pity that we suffered through a couple of nasty injuries to the two Jasons. I hope they are both back at pre-season training, fit and rearing to go.
I am quite positive that Rangers are the sleeping giants at this level and am determined that we will build on the good work of the past couple of years and be in a position to pick up some prize money this year.
The younger players in the squad will, I am sure, improve again and as previously we should see some more competition for places with some new faces coming on board. As with most successful teams it is to the senior members of the squad that we look for leadership and again club stalwarts like Stroudy, Steelo, Harves, Tony Wilson and the big unit Ged Killick have all played their part in helping our younger players and me. Working with the senior and reserve teams has been good for me, however I am looking to discuss some possible changes with the committee for next season. I believe we must keep expanding our programmes in order to keep moving ahead and see the need for more coaching staff and, I hope, another team.
On an overall club basis, congratulations to our junior, youth and womens divisions for their efforts this last year, again I feel sure that we are heading in the right direction and it has been heartening to see our young players recognised with places in Provincial, Federation and National squads.
Finally my thanks to Dave and Bryan for their sterling efforts and to Bede and his committee for their support, indeed thanks to all those who keep the club ticking over so well. It is a joy to come back to Rangers at any time, and a pleasure to play at the home of soccer, keep it up and roll on next season.
