Mainland have had the result of their National Womens League match v Capital (Oct 16), reversed due to NZ Soccer independent appeals committee ruling that Mainland fielded an ineligible player (Stacey Malloch). 7 September 2004

Technical beat Rangers 3-0 in the English Cup Quarter-Final at English Park. The scoreline flattered Rangers thanks to a crossbar, goal-line clearance, several Jordan Buchanan saves and some woeful Tech finishing. Rangers mustered a handful of chances, James Souter could have found himself scoring for Rangers with some better finishing, but in the end it was a relief that the scoreline didn't reflect the performance.

6 September 2004

Miramar beat Waitakere City 1-0 in the Chatham Cup Final, with a goal early in the second period of extra time. Chris Peck (90 first team apps for Rangers AFC first team to 2003) now has a winners' medal, playing the whole game for Miramar wide on the left, despite a clash of heads in the first half which had him looking a bit groggy shortly after.

4 September 2004

Further to yesterday's news item regarding the Chatham Cup Final, NZ soccer has announced that Chris Peck has been named in Miramar's starting line-up (shirt No. 9) for Monday night's game v Waitakere City.

3 September 2004

Chris Peck, who made 90 first team appearances for Rangers before his transfer to Miramar last summer, has been named in Miramar's squad for the Chatham Cup Final, according to NZ Soccer. Miramar will play Waitakere City at North Harbour Stadium, Albany, 7.35pm, Monday 6 September. There is live TV coverage on Sky. 29 August 2004

Rangers win Womens Division 2 Cup beating Western 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 draw after extra time. Rangers lead 2-0 at half-time but Western equalised in the sixth minute of injury time at the end of the second half, following an injury that saw Rangers having to replace their goalkeeper.

28 August 2004

A disappointing day as all three Rangers sides (Reserves, Presidents C [Bee], and Masters A) lost in the semi-finals of their respective Cups. The Masters Division 1 Cup semi-final went to penalties after Rangers and Technical drew 1-1 after extra time.

27 August 2004

The Masters Division 1 Cup Semi-Final between Rangers and Technical has been transferred to Cuthberts 6 at 2.30pm tomorrow, according to Mainland Soccer. It has been raining/sleeting/snowing in Christchurch for the past few days.

25 August 2004

In Cup Semi-Final action this Saturday are the Reserves at Nomads (Tulett, 12.30pm), Rangers Bee (Presidents C) at Universities (Ilam, 2.30pm) and Masters A home to Technical (Eric Adam Park, 2.30pm). While on Sunday, Rangers will play Western in the Womens Division 2 Cup Final at Bexley (10.30am).

22 August 2004

Rangers finished the Womens Division One League season with a bye and remain in 5th place. Meanwhile Rangers are through to the Womens Division 2 Cup Final after winning 3-1 at Avon United in the semi-final.

21 August 2004

Seventh place is the final standing for Rangers in the Mainland Premier League after a 3-3 draw with Western in the last league match of the season (also Rangers' 100th Mainland/Federation 6 Premier League match). The Reserves are through to the semi-final of their Cup with a 4-1 win over New Brighton, which saw Jason Stapley take to the field for the first time this season and score after 30 seconds, coming on as a substitute for Rangers. The expected semi-final clash between the two Rangers Presidents grade teams has not materialised after the Dipsticks lost 3-4 in 'golden goal' extra time to Universities. Barry's team, however, won 1-0 at Woolston WMC and thus Rangers Bee will play at Universities in the semi-final next week. Masters A are through to the semi-final of the Masters Cup, but Rangers Black in Mens Division 1 are eliminated at the quarter-final stage.

14 August 2004

Rangers are in 8th place in Mainland Premier League, after losing 1-3 at home to Ferrymead Bays. Reserves, Rangers Black (Div 1) and both Presidents teams all progress to Cup quarter-finals. With Rangers Bee (Pres C) progressing with another Joe Kearns hat-trick, despite losing 3-5. Spikes celebrate their 25th anniversary with a 5-2 win over HSOB in Masters Div 2.

7 August 2004

Goals from Pachalo Chinula, after seven minutes and with seven minutes remaining, secured a 2-0 Mainland Premier League win for Rangers at New Brighton (an 'away' game played at Cuthberts). Paris Kermedelidis, a NZ U15 rep earlier this year, made his first team debut for Rangers, appearing as a substitute in the second half. Gavin Jeffs tried to waltz around most of the New Brighton defence at one stage in the first half, being stopped in the penalty area by the last defender before he could get a shot away. Phil Mihaljovic was hitting shots from outside the area, both of the palm-stinging and bobbling slowly along the ground to the New Brighton keeper varieties. Jordan Buchanan made some good one-on-one saves in the Rangers goal, and Mike Harvey nearly beat the New Brighton keeper direct from a free-kick. The result ensures last place for New Brighton and their spot in the relegation/promotion playoffs. All other matches involving Rangers teams were postponed.

6 August 2004

Mainland Soccer advise that apart from Mainland Premier League, all mens, womens, youth and junior matches scheduled for Saturday 7 August and Sunday 8 August have been postponed. The Mainland Premier League match between New Brighton and Rangers has been transferred to Cuthberts Green 2.45pm Saturday. It has been raining heavily in Christchurch today and last night. Cup matches scheduled will be played the following weekend and league matches will be played at the conclusion of the league.

31 July 2004

Rangers ended their home unbeaten run in Mainland Premier (since 5 Aug 2003) and for the second consecutive match increased the margin of the club's record defeat in Mainland Premier League, losing 0-5 at home to league-leaders Nelson Suburbs. Nelson's first goal was scored after 28 seconds, and the half-time score was 0-1. The result sends Rangers to 8th place after Christchurch United beat New Brighton.

Good wins though for both Masters teams.

27 July 2004

The Canterbury Draught Rangers AFC 5-a-side Tournaments (mens and womens) will take place at Eric Adam Park on Tuesday evenings from 28 September 2004 to 14 December 2004. Follow this link for more details and entry form.

Mainland Soccer have announced that Rangers' Premier League match against Western originally scheduled for Saturday 24 July has been postponed to Saturday 21 August at Eric Adam Park due to Western's participation in a Chatham Cup Quarter-Final (v Miramar at 2pm Sunday 25 July at English Park).

17 July 2004

The worst result ever in Mainland/Federation 6 Premier League for Rangers as the first team lost 4-0 at Nomads United to slide from 4th to 7th place. Rangers now have no mathematical chance of catching league leaders Nelson Suburbs who are 14 points ahead (with Rangers having 4 games remaining).

10 July 2004

Rangers beat Technical 1-0 in Mainland Premier League with a 25-yard free-kick from Phil Mihajlovic. Nathan Wood made his 100th first team appearance for Rangers in this match. The result moves Rangers into 4th place and means that Rangers have avoided the relegation playoff with 5 games remaining. Reserves beat Tech 4-1 with a Paul Stanley hat-trick.

28 June 2004

The funeral service for George Ives will be held at 11am, Wednesday 30 June 2004, at the Kerrs Road chapel, Lamb and Hayward, corner of Kerrs Road and Pages Road.

26 June 2004

George Ives, Rangers AFC Life Member - and in recent years noted for being part of the 'Last of the Summer Wine' - passed away this morning (funeral details to follow). There was a minute's silence before today's Mainland Premier League match at Eric Adam Park, prior to Rangers demolishing Halswell 4-1, with a Jamie Baldaro hat-trick and a goal to Will Owen, in a spirited display that would have had George beaming with pride.

19 June 2004

In Masters Division 1, Rangers beat Technical 1-0 at Eric Adam Park. Good wins to both Mens Division 1 teams (with Snow's beating league leaders Halswell 2-0), and Rangers Bee in Presidents C (a Joe Kearns hat-trick in a 5-1 win over Universities). Unfortunately, first team and reserves dropped points at Avon United (1-1 and 1-3 respectively).

3 May 2004

According to nzsoccerscoreboard.com, Rangers have been drawn at home to Technical in the next round of the Chatham Cup, 22 May.

1 May 2004

In Round One of the Chatham Cup, a good first half performance saw Rangers win 3-1 at New Brighton. Other results through the grades were much better than last week, with the Reserves, and both Masters teams winning.

24 April 2004

Rangers Presidents Bee won 3-1 at Halswell United. Rangers led 2-0 at half-time after Phil Clayton met a corner at the far post, driving the ball back across goal, where it took a deflection off a Halswell defender but the keeper was unable to hold the ball. Anthony Williams attempted to prod it home, but it was cleared off the line into the legs of another Halswell defender and into the goal. Joe Kearns scored the second for Rangers, after the crossbar had been hit. In the second half Mark Shepherd hit the crossbar for Rangers, and Joe Kearns had a header cleared of the line, which Rangers players claimed had crossed the line (but the referee waved play-on). Halswell scored with a shot that hit the post and went in, but Rangers secured the win with a Mark Shepherd shot into the top corner. There were other matches involving Rangers teams played throughout the grades today, if you enjoy horror shows, then you can view the outcomes on the Results page.

22 April 2004

In the Chatham Cup Round One draw, Rangers have been drawn at New Brighton on 1 May, 2.00pm, at Bexley Reserve.

17 April 2004

Rangers record their first win of 2004 Mainland Premier season, beating Christchurch United 4-1 at home. Rangers dominated the first half with goals to Steve Docherty and Jamie Baldaro. Christchurch United eased back into it in the second half and pulled one back, which gave them confidence. With United in search of an equaliser and 2 minutes remaining spectators were biting their nails. Mike Harvey received the ball on the halfway line and it went up, up, up, up in the air; it came down, down, down... over the United keeper's head and below the crossbar. So when asked at the next Rangers quiz night to complete the sequence: Nayim, Beckham, ...? The answer is Harvey!     Ryan Burson added a fourth for Rangers with time almost up.

In other matches there were comprehensive wins for Rangers Reserves, 4th Division, Presidents C (Barry's) and Masters 2 (Spikes).

6 April 2004

New Zealand Soccer has announced the make-up of the new, franchise-based, National League. Canterbury United are in. The other seven teams are: Otago United, Team Wellington, Youngheart Manawatu, Napier City, Waikato FC, Auckland City, Waitakere United. The teams to miss out are Ole Madrids (Wellington), Team Bay of Plenty, and East Auckland. The National League will be played over 3 rounds from mid October 2004, with the top 3 to the finals. The league winner will qualify direct to the grand final hosting the winner of 2v3. The grand final winner will be the New Zealand rep for the Oceania Club Championship qualifying series for the World Club Championship. Players for Mainland Premier League sides, such as Rangers, are eligible for selection for Canterbury United.

3 April 2004

A frustrating opening day of the season, in Mainland Premier League a Jamie Baldaro goal snared a 1-1 draw at home to Avon United. The womens first team had champions Nomads rattled holding them out for 42 minutes before capitulating to a 3-0 half-time deficit, Rangers eventually lost 5-0. Snows (Mens Div 1 White) and Presidents Bee conceded a late free-kick and penalty respectively to draw 2-2 in their matches against Western and Nomads. Masters Div 1 held 0-0 by Rangiora. But a semblance of pride was restored by the Reserves who thrashed Avon 10-2, Division 4 who beat Burnside 2-0, and the Spikes who beat Rangiora 4-3 in Masters Division 2.

28 March 2004

In Alan Stroud's testimonial, Stroudy kept a clean sheet for the twenty minutes he was in goal for the Alan Stroud XI, before playing outfield and scoring twice (including a penalty) in his side's 6-5 victory over the Malcolm Ellis XI at Eric Adam Park.

27 March 2004

According to the NZ Soccer website, Rangers are one of the 12 teams from Mainland that have drawn a bye through to Round One of the Chatham Cup, bypassing the Preliminary Round.

25 March 2004

21 March 2004

Goals to Jonathan Deaker and Keith Grosvenor saw Halswell United beat Ferrymead Bays 2-0 in the Final of the Rangers Tournament. Jonathan Deaker was also sent off after receiving 2 yellow cards. Western took 3rd place, scoring twice in the last five minutes to beat Nomads 2-1.

20 March 2004

Rangers women finish second in the New Brighton pre-season Tournament, after Dux de Lux arrived with only 6 players and defaulted the last match. Rangers lost only one match in the six team round-robin tournament, to the hosts New Brighton A last week.

17 March 2004

Halswell United will play Ferrymead Bays in the Final of the Rangers Tournament at Eric Adam Park on Sunday 3pm. In tonight's semi-finals Halswell beat Western 2-0, and Bays defeated Nomads 6-2. Western and Nomads will play off for third in the curtain-raiser to the Final at 1pm.

Mathew Thomas has been named in the New Zealand U15 squad to play in the Mario Vespignani Tournament in Italy at the beginning of May. This young goalkeeper played for Rangers juniors last year, and will soon have the chance to play against the likes of Roma, Juventus and Everton.

14 March 2004

Western beat Avon United 4-0 in Group A of the Rangers Tournament to qualify for a semi-final against Halswell. Rangers are eliminated on goal difference, finishing equal on points with Nomads and Western.

10 March 2004

Last year's league champions, Nomads United lost 1-0 to Rangers in Group A of the Rangers Tournament, despite the hosts being reduced to 9 players with Will Owen dismissed for violent conduct (retaliation, within the first twenty minutes) and Paul Hughes for two bookable offences later in the game. But James Baldaro scored on debut for Rangers to secure a result that sees Western having to win by at least a three goal margin v Avon on Sunday to prevent Rangers from progressing to a semi-final meeting with Halswell (Group B winners with a 1-1 draw with Group B runners-up Ferrymead Bays) next Wednesday. Nomads have secured a spot in the semis and, unless Western win by the largest margin in the 2004 Tournament so far, Nomads will meet Bays in the other semi.

7 March 2004

Rangers move to second in Group A of the Rangers Tournament after group leaders Nomads beat Western 3-1, sending Western to third on goal difference. Rangers can, on Wednesday night, guarantee a place in the semi-finals with a two goal victory over Nomads. Any lesser result will mean Rangers will depend on the Western v Avon game next Sunday in order to qualify for the semis. Meanwhile in Group B, Halswell United secured a semi-final spot, beating New Brighton 1-0.

3 March 2004

Rangers beat Avon United 2-0 in the Rangers Tournament with a first half goal to Terry Downes and a second half goal to sub James Moore. In the late match Christchurch United lost 3-0 to Bays, meaning Chch United are unable to qualify for the semi-finals despite having one match remaining.

29 February 2004

Rangers' first match in the Rangers Tournament ended up Rangers 0 Western 1. Notable for Rangers' first team debuts to S Hanmer, R Bahr, N Christmas, S Docherty, J Moore and P Mihajlovic - and the return of James Souter. Paul Hughes had a header from a corner for Rangers cleared off the line in the 81st minute, but Western sneaked a goal three minutes later. Rangers 'keeper Jordan Buchanan was booked on the hour mark after a Western player ran in to him in a one-on-one situation. The referee initially awarded a penalty kick, but after consultation with an assistant (linesman) changed it to a free kick outside the penalty area. Rangers had enough possession and moments of individual and team play that showed there is much potential that can be built on.

18 February 2004

Sara Clapham made her full international debut for the New Zealand women's team, appearing as a 76th minute substitute in New Zealand's 0-2 loss to Australia.

17 February 2004

The squad is coached by Martin Stewart (a former Rangers mens first team coach), assisted by Brian Lay (a former Rangers physio). The League commences this weekend with Mainland having the bye. Mainland's first match will be at 7.00pm on Friday 6 February at English Park v Force 3 (Waikato-BoP)
For squad details and fixtures, refer to the New Zealand Soccer website

29 January 2004
