It is a shame that one of the greatest fighters in boxing history has so little exposure on-line. Perhaps with the upcoming Spike Lee film on the Bomber more fans will take an interest in this great legend. I believe he was the greatest heavyweight champion of all-time (although Ali is a close second), and certainly the best puncher. His short punches and quick combinations were both breathtaking and devastating. Amazingly, his merits as a man outweigh his incredible acc mplishments as a prizefighter. In a world with too few heroes both inside and outside of the ring, Joe Louis is a reminder of what one man can do. His courage and dignity should be an inspiration to us all. When Joe Louis reigned supreme over the heavywei ht division, boxing (and in my mind, the entire country) really had a King. He is, and always will be, the stuff of legend. |

Enjoyed all of it and have a tendency to agree that Joe Louis at his best may have beaten all of them, even Mohammed Ali. They say styles make fights and styles sometimes determine fights. I believe Joe Louis would have annihiliated most o the current crop of heavyweights today, although many of them are bigger and weigh more than him. He just would have been too fast with his hands and possessed way too much boxing skill for them. Ali would have given Joe a very, very tough fight at his b st, but I believe Joe's pressure would have given him the nod in a close decision. The two former champions who would have given Joe a lot of trouble and would have been very dangerous, particularly in the early rounds, were George Foreman at his best and of course, Charles(Sonny)Liston---the Liston several years before he fought Ali. Nobody carried the heavyweight title with more grace and more style than Joe Louis. |

He was one of the great heavyweight champs of all time, but it was Ali himself who first declared himself "The Greatest" and for a number of years most people in sports did not speak out in support of his claim. The public in general considered him a jokester who was putting everyone on in order to stay in the limeli ht.It seems to me that Ali tried to copy the style of the great Sugar Ray Robinson. I guess that if there was anyone to emulate, it was the original Sugar Ray. Ali developed himself into a fine fighter, and he fought some classic battles as did many fine fighters before him.But the champion who could beat them all was Joe Louis. |

I experienced Golden glove boxing in my mid teens at a time when I need discipline and a way to vent my frustrations in an acceptable way. Today I am an accom lished professional with three college degrees. One of my degrees is in psychology. I often wonder if boxing isn't presented as the fine art of skilled self defense? I know personally it requires all of the gross and fine motor skills, coordination, and raining of any of the other more respected sports such as gymnastics. Why does it have such a bad reputation? Perhaps because the focuse is on doing physical harm. Martial arts however has the same objective and very little of the bad publicity? Maybe we need to emphasize more of the defensive aspects of boxing. It is a part of the art of boxing that is very underrated! What do you think? |

I have read his autobiograhpy and just got a copy of his recent biography "The great black hope" ($7.00 marked down from $22 at Barnes & Nobles). Joe Louis is without question one of the greatest inside and utside of the ring. Having said that, there's absolutely no way he could have ever possibly beat Ali. I think the Billy Conn and Jersey Joe Walcott fights support my point and maybe I missed it somewhere but I didn't see any mention of his weight on your site! The weigh difference between him and true world class heavyweights would be too much. |
