SEASON OPENER - 2000
April 30, 2000
vs. Toms River Indians
at Bucks Mill, Colts Neck
!!! Welcome Back to another
exciting season of Monmouth Dodgers baseball !!!
Please check our league's website at
"usotb.com" for complete coverage of the USOTB.
The Dodgers finally opened the
2000 season this morning after a 3 week delay. Despite enduring snow,
rain and the Easter holiday, Opening Day was nearly cancelled this week
due to a scheduling conflict at Ft. Monmouth. A sophisticated reconaissance
mission utilizing high speed transport (a car) and state of the art telecommunications
( a cell phone) enabled the Dodgers to locate an available field in Colts
Neck. The first pitch was delayed a mere hour.
The Toms River Indians, an expansion
team, provided the Dodgers opening day opponent as the game was played
under a Dodger blue sky , in windy conditions. Bobby
Evans was given the starting assignment and
he pitched masterfully. Bobby yielded a mere two hits and struck out 9
in a mercy rule shortened, 5 inning, 13-0 Dodger victory.
A Rich Vincz double to right
center sparked a 4 run, first inning outburst, as the Men in Blue
never looked back. Dan Donnelly, in an effort sure to impress his new "fan",
went 3 for 3 on the day and drove in two runs. 4 separate Dodgers (Vincz,
Cannon, Donnelly and Locicero) scored two runs a piece in the blowout.
Mike Cannon showed a strong arm
at shortstop in support of Bobby Evans overpowering pitching.
