Grand Traverse Y.C. will be hosting the 2001 Interlake Nationals and this year's GWN Championship brought out those who wanted to catch a glimpse of the conditions and competition. Craig Koschalk crewed for me at this event.....marking only the 2nd time this year he's been able to get out and sail. Saturday started out extremely light and shifty. Puffs were all over, but so were the parking lots. We started toward the boat and caught a nice puff to lead the pack to the left. A couple other boats were in front of us at the top mark, but we quickly gybed to the inside and led down to the leeward mark. The breeze filled in from behind and we got stuck on the outside of the rounding in 3rd. We took a quick clearing tack and proceeded to the right-center, where we sat and watched a number of boats drift past us. Finished 7th, which was better than we thought. The second race was sailed in similar conditions, but out of a different direction. I don't recall much from this race other than there was some confusion on the course. The committee left a few marks in the water and boats were sailing for all of them. In the end, the Start/Finish mark was the leeward mark and a few of the boats that sailed a great first race, lost out. Scott Savage had an OCS and this really jumbled up the scores. After the first day....we were in 1333. 1335 3 points 1363 11 points 1333 12 points 1046 12 points 1325 15 points Sunday brought overcast skies and more breeze. By racetime, it was 10-15 with good puffs. Sunday was our day as we posted two 1st. The first race we had a very impressive lead and won by about 3 minutes over a short course. The second race was equally nice, but a little closer. 1335 scored a 9,2 on Sunday which put us in a tie for first. With our two 1st's, we won the tie-breaker. Craig and I had a wonderful time and look forward to the Nationals next year! SD |
