Gorilla Monsoon was one of the most feared competitors in the history of the World Wrestling Federation. Weighing over 400 pounds, Monsoon may be best known for airplane spinning and then bodyslamming perhaps the greatest boxer of all time, Muhammad Ali. Monsoon truly had an illustrious career in the Federation. After retiring from the ring—"I threw my tights in the Pacific Ocean," he was fond of mentioning—Monsoon became a key member of the Federation’s broadcast team. He was the voice of the syndicated "Wrestling Challenge" and "Prime Time Wrestling" on USA Network, in addition to several Pay-Per-Views and special events, for many years.
In 1997, he was named interim president of the World Wrestling Federation. However, due to increasing pressure and a heart condition, Gorilla handed off his duties later that year.
Monsoon, who today calls the action for "Canadian Superstars," is a Federation Hall of Famer who will surely go down in history as one of the most important and influential men ever in the business.
Sadly we lost Gorilla through the week of Oct 3rd, 1999 and he will be greatly missed from we as fans and even those who had the pleasure of meeting him in the ring.
