A determined effort was not enough for Plains Rangers, when they played league
leaders Te Puke in BOP division one on Saturday.
Rangers began the game well, using their passing game to good effect in the first half.
With the breeze at their backs, Rangers pinned the home team in their own half for
long periods. A few half chances were created, but not converted, but Rangers best
attempt, was an excellent 25m shot from Azza at left half. It pulled out an equally good save
from the Te Puke keeper. The score was locked at 0 - 0 at half time.
After the break the home team used the breeze to gain more territory. It was a hard
fought affair, not pretty football. The competitive spirit causing referee Michel
Nillesen to reach for his yellow card a number of times. Te Puke grabbed the only
goal of the game with 15 minutes to go. It was a scrappy affair, with Rangers keeper
Matt Aberhart blocking a first attempt and then scrambling back and just getting
beaten to the rolling ball by an attacker who gratefully pushed it home. The even-ness
of the game was well illustrated by the few saves Aberhart had to make. The game
ended with the score Te Puke 1, Plains Rangers 0.
Defender Mark Thompson stood out for Rangers and was their man of the match.
This Saturday, Rangers are at home to Rotorua Suburbs. Kick-off at the Edgecumbe
Domain is at 2 p.m.
