Plains Rangers produced a gritty performance in their home clash with
Rotorua
Suburbs on Saturday, to cement a mid-table slot in BOP Div One.
Suburbs had control of the opening period, then Rangers fought their way
back in. A
strong appeal for a penalty was turned down, and then a goal disallowed
for a high
foot. Rangers eventually got the scoring underway after the Suburbs keeper
could
only parry a well hit free kick by Mark Thompson, and the loose ball was
finished off
well.
In the final minute of the first half, momentary confusion in front of
the Rangers goal
meant a Suburbs free kick was not cleared, instead it was bundled in by
the visitors.
The second half was an even end-to-end battle, with home team pouncing
on a
Suburbs defensive error to score the winner. Rangers held their visitors
at bay for the
finals 15 minutes, to secure the 2 - 1 win.
Rangers had strong performances from Aaron Muggeridge in centre midfield,
and a
solid back four, well led by Thompson.
This weekend Rangers will have to cool their heels, as scheduled opponents
Rotorua
City are involved in the Chatham Cup.
Rangers next fixture is away to Otumoetai on May 8th.
