Here
was the news in 2007 and 2006.
30 Dec 2007 The Phoenix grab a very good away win
at third placed Newcastle, 3 - 2. 16 December Wellington Phoenix move up to 6th with a strong 1 - 1 draw with second placed Queensland Roar. Next game Dec 30th, then the last home game. 11 December Good news on the Edgecumbe Domain front. Work has recommenced on the levelling and resurfacing and with the recent rain hopefully grass will sprout! 8 December Here are some pics of the Phoenix / Beckham extravaganza last weekend. And last night the Phoenix grabbed a 3 - 0 win. If you haven't been down to watch a game, only two more chances to do so this season, This coming Friday (14th) and January 4th. If you're a football fan, you'll love it. 4 December A glorious weekend in Wellington for football fans. Baz and Ben were two Rangers players there, as well as Finchy, Lee and the Coreys from Whakatane. Great atmosphere at the Beckham game, even if the ref did gift Becks a penalty. And no none of us was the streaker. She put up a bloody good fight too! There will be plenty of new Phoenix followers after such a good two games. 28 November Sounds like Barry Lusher is leaving the Federation / BOP job. Thanks Barry for everything you've done. All the best for the future. 18 November Copies of the DVD of Rangers win at Fury on September 1st are available from Barrie. It is nearly all wide shot and with wind noise, but a worthwhile reminder of a famous win. Thanks to Dave Cook and his camera person. 17 November The Phoenix blow a 1 - 0 lead in injury time against ten man Sydney. Keeper Moss almost as good as Wett with some excellent saves. 3 November The Phoenix got back on track with a
good away win at Perth Glory, the second longest away trip in domestic
football. And we think twice when we have to go to Taupo! 29 October The Wellington Phoenix got a hiding without their well performed centre back Karl Dodd, 1 - 4 away at league leaders Adelaide tonight. Kiwi fans can still look forward to the Phoenix playing Beckham's LA Galaxy on Dec 1st. Although 25000 tickets are sold, there are a few thousand left. 22 October Rangers AGM showed that the club is in a healthy state. Player-coach Christian Wetting was reappointed for next season, with all office holders also re-elected. 15 October Rangers AGM this Thursday night, 7pm
at Margaret Elliot's, 22 Bridge Street. Bring $15 if you want to order
a cool team photo, and $15 if you want to buy a Plains Rangers 2007 banner. 13 October Rangers' Prize Giving went well at Bas's
place. Awards presented were: Young Player of the Year: Ben McPherson,
Most Promising: Josh Hyndman, Endeavour: Christian Wetting, Sportsman:
Jeremy Hawkes, Golden Boot: Simon Gowing, Personalty: Dan Baxter, Players'

Many thanks to Jodi Pitkin for the pics. 10 October Here are some awesome photos of the Sponsors' Challenge match. There are more coming too. 7 October A few pics from Bazza's trip down to watch the Phoenix last weekend. 1 October Norm Howe named Christian Wetting as
Rangers player of the day, in his radio slot tonight. Wett was certainly
in top form keeping out Whakatane's threats on Saturday. 29 September Rangers can hold their heads high after drawing 1 - 1 with
Whakatane's Federation team and being very unlucky not to be awarded a
late penalty, in the annual sponsors' challenge. Read the
report. Hopefully some photos are coming. 25 September In keeping with Rangers' players'
celebrity status, centre back Dan
Baxter has been featuring on local radio, advertising Willetts Cars.
"Buy me, get a free tv!" 23 September A good home win to finish the season. Rangers 3, TCU 0. Three good goals, good performances all over the park and entertaining football played by both teams. Here's the report. 21 September Some of the players profiles have been updated. Spot the David Beckham look-alike. Who supports QPR? 19 September A few pics from the game at Kawerau last Saturday. Also, check out what our pitch at the Edgecumbe Domain looks like now!! 16 September Rangers and Kawerau had an even battle
on their massive field, but two late opportunist goals from that renown
goal poacher Brian Muncaster gave Kawerau the win. Read the
report. Some photos might be coming in a couple of days as well! 14 September Wellington Phoenix have their first ever win in A League, away to Sydney 2 - 1. Check out our Phoenix pages. Rangers pitch has finally had work started on it today. 13 September Club meeting tonight discussed, among other things, lack of commencement of work by District Council in the levelling of our home ground, the Awakeri Events Centre usage, sponsors' challenge, Rangers Prize Giving (likely to be October 13th) - players need to decide who will receive their vote for the Players' Player of the Year award, date for Rangers' AGM is October 18th, 7pm at Margaret Elliot's place. 10 September Club meeting after practice Thursday night (13th). Some
interesting issues to discuss. 9 September A good gritty win at Awakeri over Taupo 1 - 0. Gary Fowell laid on food and drinks for everyone. Cheers Gary! Here's the report. 2 September Result of the season, a 1 - 0 away win over AFC Fury. Jezza
scored the goal just before half time, a lovely away swinger. Lots of
defence in the second half! Read the report.
Josh Hyndman even made it, leaving Auckland at 1.15 pm, in time to sub
on in the second half. Just as well, Muggsy was stuffed by that time! 29 August No early kick off on Sat, back to 2.45 pm. The weekend's results have finally come through. Rangers up to 5th. Negotiations to play Sept 8th home game at Awakeri have almost been finalised. 26 August Down 4 - 1 at half time. Good determined football, Richie got
a hat-trick and a yellow card, 6 - 4 win. Here's the
report. It doesn't mention Josh's car accident (not many people get
delivered to a game by the police!) or what Richie said to the ref! 20 August Whakatane District Council plan to start the upgrade of the Edgecumbe Domain soccer pitch next week. The ground will be rotary hoed, leveled and regrassed. Yes!! 19 August Rangers held out for a 0 - 0 half time score against league
leaders Te Puke, but Te Puke proved too strong, although the score blew
out in the end with two late disputed penalties, 5 - 1. Here's the
report. Here are Kyle's match photos. 17 August Ex-All White captain Danny Hay is speaking at the Whakatane club rooms this Saturday night, 7pm. Costs $15. Fundraiser for Scott Marrow who has been selected for NZ Secondary Schools team, who are touring to Korea. 15 August The new draw is out! Rangers are at home to league leaders
Te Puke on Saturday. Lets roll up our sleeves, spit on our hands, polish
our boots ("What?" I hear some of you say) and get ready. 14 August Otumoetai beat Kawerau 1 - 0 tonight
if our source is right. They have probably pushed Old Blues out of the
top seven. It now means that the two teams who played an extra game above
everyone else both finished ahead of Rangers! 12 August Rangers, fielding a bare eleven, had a good tussle with Trident
HS. After a first half where the students took it to Rangers, Rangers
upped the ante in the second. Muggsy scored from close in and a good chip
caused an unfortunate defender to head into his own net. Rangers 2 - 0
win. 11 August Only one Tasman Bowl result thru. Greerton had a game of two halves (surprise!) against Katikati, but winning the second half 2 - 1 wasn't enough! Tasman Cup and Bowl results here, when they arrive! 9 August Some catch-up games are scheduled for this Saturday, along with the Tasman Cup and Bowl semis. Rangers do not have a league game, but there is a friendly against Trident High School on Sunday, at Trident at 12 noon. 5 August
A superb first half performance, 4 - 0 ahead at half time, a Skins hat-trick
(including a cheeky back heel and a 'header' with his shoulder), Skins
saving Bas's header from going in, just some of the highlights from today's
7 - 2 win against Otumoetai Two. The visitors had the grace to say we
were the best team they'd played this season, in the aftermatch speech.
Excellent refereeing by David Cox. Here's the match
report. 31 July Rumour that the 3rd round of BOP div one has been replaced by top four bottom four. 28 July Some goals at last. New strike combo Josh Hyndman and Muggsy brought a change of luck. Wett even got a run up front. Read the report. 26 July Want directions to AFC Fury on Sat? Early k o 12.30 Click
here. 25 July An early kick-off at Te Puna, 12.30, before
Fury 1st team plays Old Blues. 22 July The old story, you have to score goals to win. Rangers looked
good in their new strip, but conceding a goal in the first 30 seconds
put paid to any notions of it being a lucky day. Check out the photos
and match report. 20 July Some interesting clashes in Bay Two this
Sat. Taupo v Fury (2nd v 1st), Te Puke v Whk, Old Blues v Kaw (4th v 5th).
18 July News that the div two league will be split into two groups of seven after Aug 4th, so each group has a bye. Points carried through. 17 July Training in the fog! Good news that captain Richie Nillesen is cleared to be back in training and playing, after two months out of action. Dan Logan departs for the skifields however after a useful contribution in the last two games. 16 July Rangers' opponents this Saturday are Papamoa, who pulled off
a shock win in the Tasman Bowl on Saturday, beating Whakatane div 1 team
1 - 0. Maybe JP can give us some inside knowledge for this Saturday. Tasman
Cup and Bowl results. 9 July Another frustrating day for Rangers, with dominance at Greerton, but having to accept a 2 - 2 draw. A brief report. Photos from the game on Shane's Greerton website. Lots of draws including 2 - 2 between Fury and Te Puke. 2 July A tremendous battle with Te Puke in the Tasman Cup, 0 - 0 after
full time and extra time, then a 5 - 4 loss in the penalty shoot out.
Wett in brilliant form in goal, Dan Logan lasted 120 min in his first
game for ages, Steve got booked. Photos coming soon. Here's the
report. Here are the photos. There are
lots, so they might take a while to come through! They're worth it though. 24 June Not taking chances and a bemusing penalty
decision cost Rangers against TCU. The strong wind affected the game too.
Ouch! Read the report. 19 June Rangers have got Te Puke in Tasman Cup quarter finals on 30 June, at Te Puke. Memories of last year's hard fought Tasman Bowl semifinal come flooding back. Hey we won that one! Here's the rest of the draw. A point of interest is that the two teams who defaulted their way into the Tasman Bowl have, fairly, been left out of it. Makes sorting out the following round rather tricky though. 16 June Hard fought win at home to Taupo, 2 - 1. Jeremy scales a ladder to get down our match ball from its cabbage tree home from last week. A superb Bas header and a Jerm header do the business. We won't mention the first goal! So, who will Rangers meet in the next round? Not either Whakatane team, Greerton or Old Blues... or Fury (they don't enter). Check out a few pics from today's game. Match report 14 June A full-on training tonight in readiness for the Tasman Cup game
on Saturday. Kawerau are already through to the next round with Old Blues
defaulting to them. Rangers new strip was unveiled at club meeting tonight,
navy blue with yellow highlights. Very classy! Many thanks to Southern
Turst for money for the strip. Just needs club monogram and sponsorship
on shirt before it's ready to hit the pitch! 10 June A good second half and a deserved 2 - 0 win v Otumoetai. Goals to Si and Jono. Wett, back in goal after a few weeks out, was hardly troubled. Bas showed what sitting on a tractor for a month does to your match fitness! Kirk showed his hair fashion sense! The match ball is still stuck in the top of a large cabbage tree! Check out the photos, courtesy of Richie. Read the match report. 8 June The Tasman Cup & Bowl draw
is out. Rangers have Taupo at home next Saturday. A chance for revenge! 4 June All BOP now knocked out of Chatham Cup,
with Taupo, TCU and TBC all out today. 2 June A poor result today, although Te Puke Reserves were pretty happy! The team didn't really gel, played well in isolated pockets, dominated territory. Bas and Richie missing. Wett was in Auckland. We drew straws to see who would have to tell him the bad news! Read the match report if you're a sadist. 27 May Four excellent goals and an outstanding
save to deny a fifth made for a good 4 - 1 win against Old Blues. Read
the match report.
Some good photos are here too, thanks Kyle. 23 May Te Puke, in our good ol' BOP div two, did well to knock Federation
team Rotorua Utd out of the Chatham Cup and then push former semifinalists
Ngaruawahia very hard, going down 5 - 4 away. Here's coach Macca's version
of the game... 22 May Sounds like not a very pleasant game at Kawerau, with two red cards on Saturday. Three BOP teams are into the 2nd round of the Chatham Cup - their draw is on our results page.. 19 May Rangers, hampered by injuries and non-availability, deserved more in their game at Taupo, as commented by the hosts in the aftermatch speeches. A 2 - 0 loss was disappointing for injured player-coach Christian Wetting, injured captain Richie Nillesen and the handful of supporters who traveled down. Read the report. At least the trip back wasn't as miserable as that of South Auckland Rangers, who were beaten 5 - 0 on the neighbouring pitch in the Chatham Cup. 13 May A hard physical battle with Te Puke. Two penalty claims turned down. Injuries to Richie and Christian. Bas escapes the pickers to play 30 minutes. Te Puke win 1 - 0. Here's the match report. A few other results drifting in, if you want your team's results on, send me an email! 8 May All local results now up to date. 6 May A solid win yesterday at Whakatane. An early
penalty was converted by Richie, and later super sub Skins scored, Ben
also had a goal disallowed. Mark complained of a headache after breathing
in the sunscreen protecting his opposite Danny Smith's bald head! Read
the match report. 2 May Rangers have a 12.30pm kick-off at Whakatane this Saturday. Don't
be late! 29 April Rangers fought valiantly against a mainly Brazilian Fury team, going down by two penalties. Food poisoning meant captain Richie Nillesen struggled through half a game, but Wetts was pleased with his team's effort, which got stronger as the game went on. Read the match report.See some action photos. Photographer Jesse Peach. 26 April Ex-coach Cusack turns up to training, the night before he leaves
for Aussie, for a run. He was as entertaining as usual! 25 April Well done Te Puke, who are in our league, who knocked unbeaten Federation league team Rotorua United out of the Chatham Cup today, 4 - 3 on penalties after a 2 - 2 draw! Their coach Macca says, "It was hard going but the boys stuck in there. We went behind twice, came back in the last minute of extra time." 24 April Skins scored with a back heel at practice tonight!! Want to watch some local soccer on Anzac Day? Te Puke are home to Rotorua United at 2 pm in the Chatham Cup. Te Puke-uke-uke Oi Oi Oi! Don't do this on Saturday boys.... (tempting though it might be) A Brazilian defender was booked for kissing the referee during a match
at the weekend. 22 April A good win against a young Kawerau team
on their huge new pitch (120 metres long), tempered by injuries to Richie
and Jono. Read the match report.
19 April This Saturday's game at Kawerau is going ahead, despite both
teams missing several players. It's a chance to try out the 'new' Kawerau
venue Tarawera Park. Directions to get there are listed below (under April
11th). 17 April Hold your horses!!!! Withdrawal of two teams has meant the BOP div 2 and 3 leagues have been combined, a new draw came out today. We now play Kawerau this Saturday!! 14 April A reasonable result to start the season, a 1 - 1 draw with Whkatane, though with a little more luck, the two shots of scorer Ben McPherson that hit the post might have gone in. Read the match report. 13 April News that Rotorua United have pulled their team out of our division at the last minute, so we now have a bye in the league. 11 April. First game worries. Kawerau are worried people might go to
their old ground to try and play them or referee or just watch. Diane
has kindly sent out these instructions for finding the new venue... 10 April A hard out training, with untold laps
of the field, star shuttle runs, shooting and small sided games. The boys
are getting psyched up for Saturday! 4 April The draw is out. First up a local derby, at home to Whakatane on 14 April. Woohoo!!. Click here to see our schedule. Some of the other BOP draws are posted too, the rest coming soon ( click on the BOP results link). 3 April Full moon tonight for training, meaning
the floodlights seemed 100% more powerful than usual! However, because
someone forgot to bring the cones, it was rather hard to spot the pair
of jandals trying to act as goal posts! 29 March Training on Tues and Thurs from next week, 6pm. 25 March The
Chatham Cup draw is out, with a number of BOP teams involved. Have
a look. The Federation League is there too. 21 March Rangers held their own against 1st division Whakatane
Town reserves in a pre-season warm-up game tonight. Rangers made more
chances but couldn't finish them, while at the defensive end, player-coach
Christian Wetting was quickly off his line to prevent the visitors having
any clear openings. Kyle Knight impressed in his Rangers debut in defence,
while front runners Josh van Veen and Simon Gowing worked hard and created
openings. The score: a 0 - 0 draw. 19 March Finally, the FFA has awarded the Wellington bid for the A League the licence for this coming season. Will it be Wellington Knights, Beehive Buzzers, Capital Straits? No-one knows yet, but congratulations to the Wellington bid and its "White Knight" owner Terry Serepisos. It's a long trip to Wellington for the Rangers 'Knights' supporters, but there might have to be a few road trips. 15 March Rangers first pre-season game in next Wed 21st at Edgecumbe
Domain, 5.15 pm kick-off, against Whakatane Reserves. Hopefully all the
cricketers will be back to support the rest of the squad. 3 March Great news, the Whakatane District
Council are organising laser levelling the soocer pitch on the Edgecumbe
Domain at the end of this season. To coincide with that we are hoping
to be able to buy / make some portable alloy goals. If anyone can help
us with costs or advice on these goals, please send us an email. 27 February The draft draw for the eleven team Federation League is out to clubs. The league looks set to start on April 14. Closest local team Whakatane are home to Ngongy. 25 February More light on the league changes.
Sounds like Otumoetai were asked to pull one of their 1st div teams out,
so Whakatane and Rotorua United then were accommodated in div one and
Kawerau were promoted up divisions, which what pretty much what they all
wanted. 23 February An excellent well planned out first practice last
night got everyone going. 18 February Good turn out for first run
today. Returning coach Christian Wetting, with his faithful mascot dog
Georgia in tow, got the boys finding some old combinations on the pitch.
Rangers has a decent squad to take up their 2nd division spot this season. 14 February News from BOP meeting tonight. Taupo Nui-a-Tia have pulled out of BOP div two, with Te Puke's 3rd div team promoted to take their place. Federation League is now possibly up to 12 teams. No negotiation available for clubs who wish to alter the division their teams have been placed in, hence Whakatane have two teams in div two, as now do Te Puke, Otumoetai have two in div one. Two teams will be automatically promotoed and relegated between the BOP divisions at season's end. 5 February Rangers first get together and training run on Sunday 18th February, 3 pm at the Edgecumbe Domain. 4 February Melbourne Victory are through to the A League grand
final, where they will play the winner of Adelaide v Newcastle (who eliminated
last year's champions Sydney). Check out all the results on our A
League page. 31 January
Great news, Christian Wetting appointed player-coach for this season.
Christian has been doing well round the rugby grounds the last few seasons,
after being one of the standout football players in the BOP previously. 24 January Want to see how the A League finals are set up? Will
the runaway winners of the A League (Melbourne Victory) win the finals?
Check out our A League fixtures and results
page. 22 January
Rangers lads Jerm, Ash and Bazza (lad, yeh right) enjoy the final party
in Bloc Five supporting the Knights, who end the season with another great
win. Jerm and Ash, decked out in piuius, even manage to score Noah Hickey
and Jonti Richter's shorts! Click here to
see fun in the crowd photos from the final Knights home game. Hopefully
they will be back next year. 12 January Knights drew 0 - 0 at Central Coast, to have only one
loss in their last six outings. 7 January Knights supporters have a very happy new year with their team beating champions Sydney FC away 1 - 0, courtesy of a nice Che Bunce volley. 30 December A brilliant win to the Knights at home to the Queensland
Roar. 3 - 1. The home crowd went crazy. A big invite to investors thinking
of buying the Knights. The support and team are there ready and waiting!
Check out Bazza's photos of the end of the
game. 17 December The NZ Knights have imploded with owners pulling out over a battle with FFA over funding and FFA withdrawing licence. Soccer NZ, with coach Ricki Herbert caretaker in charge. A farcical two days saw Knights head to Melbourne with nine players plus ring-ins from Aussie to play. It was good to see John Tambouras back, but experienced front-line players didn't get a seat on the plane (e.g. Emblen, Bazeley, Bunce, Gordon). 10 December Two draws in a row for the Knights. Player strength picking up with Salley and Johnson back. Chinese import Gao scores. Paston good saves. Romario subbed off early for Adelaide as Knights kept him very quiet! 26 November Jonas Salley comes back from injury for the NZ Knights, 31 degrees in Perth, Hickey scores, Knights lead, Salley a yellow card, another, red, Knights lose 4 - 1. Doh! 19 November The Knights sack coach Paul Nevin, but the injury toll is so high, they can barely field a team at home to C C Mariners and end up losing 2 - 0. Three Waikato FC players are arrested for assault after a game against Hawkes Bay in the NZFC. 12 November
Rangers AGM re-elected Stewart Sutton as treasurer, Margaret Elliot secretary
and Barrie Hawkes president. After a successful year off the pitch, the
club is in good shape for the future. 29 October Apparently ex-England soccer legend Alan Ball is interested in coaching the NZ Knights! Not many other people would be at the moment. 22 October
Plains Rangers break-up and prize giving went well last night. Bas's venue
provided an excellent venue. Backyard cricket in the afternoon was fun
and competitive, with the muddy drain, kiwifruit vines, house, swimming
pool, Lewis the dog and a sporting pitch features. Margaret Elliot's catch
in the barbecue area finished the game nicely! 11 October Good news. The Council is planning to laser level the
soccer field at the Edgecumbe Domain over the summer and attend to the
weeds growing in the turf. Maybe we'll have a much better surface to play
on next season. 8 October Rangers awards are being given out on Saturday 21 Oct. Being presented are Golden Boot (should be easy), Personality, Sportsman, Endeavour, Most Promising (thats not talking about paying their subs) Players' Player of the Year, and Player of the Year. If you'd like to guess who will get what, make your guesses on our Guestbook (it could be a Guessbook for now). Sorry these jokes are about as bad as Steve's at Coach Cusack's engagement party on Saturday. 6 October Some great action photos
from the Sponsors' Challenge last Saturday, thanks Pete Sheather. 30 September
A warm sunny day for the Sponsors Challenge. Whakatane played the game
at speed and had Rangers under pressure. With the help of the post, Whakatane
had a 1 - 0 lead at half time, but went on to win comfortably 5 - 1. An
enjoyable game with a good crowd of several hundred in attendance. Click
here for a few pics, with hopefully more to come. Read the report. 26 September Check out the Photo of the week!! 23 September Incident packed, not very pretty, Rangers, down to nine men, lose in final second 2 - 1. Read the report. Te Puke drew 1 - 1 with Taupo Nui. 17 September Rangers gave league champs Fury a stern test at Te
Puna and might well feel unlucky to have lost 3 - 2 after putting together
some great football. Action pics are here,
thanks to supersub Steve Vierboom. Read the
report. 14 September
Club meeting. Four members put forward for Life Memberships. Club break-up
date 21 October at Bas Overdevest's place. Margaret Elliot kindly offered
to donate the Elliot Sportsmanship Trophy. Players were asked for nominations
for the Players' Player of the Year. Supporters will be asked too for
their player of the year.. The next meeting is Tuesday 3rd October at
Margaret's place. 10 September Taupo Nui-a Tia toppled AFC Fury 3 - 1 in Taupo yesterday,
so hopefully Fury will still be depressed next Saturday! Click
here for directions to get to AFC Fury's ground. 9 September
Rangers come down to Earth with a home loss to Te Puke. Despite a good
second half showing, Rangers didn't do enough to convert their possession
and dominance into goals. Read the
report. 3 September Rangers win the Tasman Bowl in front of a good crowd,
beating home team Kawerau 2 - 0 with Harley de Lacy scoring a stunning
double. Read the report.
Here are the photos to show you how it all
happened! 27 August Tasman
Bowl final is to kick off at 12 noon this Saturday, followed by the cup
final. 24 August A 12.30 kick-off in Taupo on Saturday. The boys will
have to stay home Friday night, except for Kirk who will still be celebrating
the arrival of a new baby. Congratulations! The referees are back (hopefully
not with a vengeance!) this weekend. Well done to Deano who travelled
an hour to come to training again tonight, and to the boys who put in
the hard tackles at training. You know who you are. 19 August Rangers came away with a deserved 1 - 0 home win against Taupo One. After a number of close shaves, a Bas Overdevest header made the difference. Rangers have now put together six wins in a row, although one of them was by default! Well done to Chris Whitaker who stepped into the middle in the absence of a ref. Here's the match report. 16 August Sounds like the referees have withdrawn their services
from all Fed Three games this weekend, due to lack of payment of fees.
Well done to the refs for asserting themselves (they're used to doing
that I hear you say!). Hopefully this can be sorted out quickly and nothing
goes too wrong without them this weekend. 15 August The
Caper Super League draw is out, combining the first divisions of BOP and
Waikato. The first matches are this weekend. Check it out via our BOP
results link. Meanwhile, the referees had a serious meeting last night,
unhappy with a number of issues, and we await the outcome. 13 August Rangers won a hard fought Tasman Bowl semi final at Te Puke. A header apiece in normal time, a penalty apiece in extra time, then Rangers won the penalty shoot out 4 - 1. Here's the match report. Here are some cool photos. Kawerau now have a date with Rangers in the final after taking a creditable 1 - 0 win at Taupo. Simon Storey's Zidane impression might have him on the sideline for a while though. 11 August Change of date for Tasman Cup & Bowl finals, to fit in with the 1st division's combined league with Waikato. The Finals are now September 2nd. Hopefully Rangers will have to postpone their scheduled league game against Whakatane, so they can play the final. Tomorrow's semi at Te Puke will decide that! 7 August Upsets in div two, with top two teams both losing. Most results are here. Our div three points table is different to Force Three's. We've added the points on to the existing one, while they've started a new one, which has Rangers top. Top of the table! At least temporarily in F3's mind. 6 August A shame to hear that ref Dave Cox had to abandon the Opotiki - Katikati div two game because of spectator abuse. With Katikati leading 4 - 0 after 70 minutes, the judiciary will have to decide if that result stands. 6 August Ref Dave Taylor turned up and did a great job of the
game yesterday. Rangers played some of their best football of the season,
with the midfield in rampant form. Two goals in each half and a 4 - 0
win against Greerton. Richie managed to lock his keys in his car and the
lads spent half the aftermatch trying to open it! See
here! Here's the match report 1 August Rangers have drawn Te Puke away in the Tasman Bowl semifinal on Aug 12th, while Kawerau get to travel to Taupo Nui-a-tia in the other semi. 30 July The new draw is out, for the top 7 (Group A) and bottom 7 (Group B). Chek it out here. This Saturday Rangers are home to Greerton, and in a tasty match-up Whakatane travel to play AFC Fury. Hopefully both teams will arrive on time! 27 July Another
enthusiastic training, with Harley back from sunning it up in Europe,
and scoring a lovely goal to show he hasn't lost his touch. 26 July Well Nike are sponsoring Soccer NZ, which in turn sent vouchers to the clubs for free Nike Pro Base Layer garments, just like Ryan Nelsen uses at Blackburn, so the sweat is absorbed away from his skin (it might well freeze at Blackburn). Anyway, two lucky recipients at Plains Rangers were Jerm and Bazza. You can see them modelling their new base layers on photo of the week. Modelling contract available from Rangers for any other products, this could be the start of a lucrative sideline. Can't wait to see Richie wearing his. There may be a Rangers calendar for next year!! 25 July Seems a bit strange that this weekend is reserved for three catch-ups , none of which will affect the placings of the teams into the Top or Bottom 7 divisions. Greerton v Suburbs looks the most interesting, though Ngongy, after their good recent form, might offer Fury some competition. So far Rangers haven't managed to secure a friendly game and may resort to another intersquad game this weekend. 24 July Taupo One couldn't field a team, so Rangers are through
to the Tasman Bowl semis, winning by default. JP, Muggsy and Bas all tried
to claim the two goals to add to their tally! Rangers had an intersquad
game and barbecue instead. 18 July The league tables are updated with Rangers up to fourth. The league is to be split in half. Maybe catchup games have to be played in some instances, although it looks like the split could be done without most of them. 16 July The Knights started their preseason cup with a creditable home draw against Newcastle Jets. Keep an eye on out Knights pages. 15 July Rangers
did not play their best but managed a 3 - 2 away win on a tricky Otumoetai
pitch. Muggsy scored with a cross and a deflection off his back, while
Bas sneaked one under the keeper. Rangers defence was not its usual tight
self, still a win's a win. Read the
report. 10 July The Italians claim victory! Lets hope BOP players don't head butt a la Zidane when they get frustrated. Dave Cook saw his team Fury win 3 - 2 against Te Puke and hallucinate about a female streaker distracting them! In div one Whakatane and Otumoetai battled a gale force wind down the pitch and scarcely got out of their own penalty area when playing into it. 8 July A good hard fought win at home to Ngongy. Jerm steals Richie's cross and scores. JP and a Ngongy defender get away with hand balls in the boxes. Muggsy scores with a toe poke. The battery of photographers is nearly as many as at the world cup. Read the match report and view the action pics.. 6 July The Beacon have some brilliant action pics of Rangers home game v Whakatane on June 24th. The proofs are available at the front desk, and photos are $10 each. There are quite a few of Bas! 3 July The league tables are up to date, with Rangers dropping to 7th as a result from the draw. In division two some shock results with both leaders losing. Tauranga Boys College are on the rise. 1 July Rangers played some great football at Greerton, scored
twice, hit the woodwork three times, had a goal disallowed and missed
two open goals on the way to a 2 - 2 draw that should probably have been
a win. Dean Butterworth made a welcome return, with three regulars missing
(JP, Kirk and Harley). One of their strikers had a spectacular miss in
the second half, his shot going clean through a large closed window in
the athletic clubrooms! Read the match
report. 29 June Congratulations to Jason (JP) and Tracey on the birth of a daughter last night. At practice tonight JP was explaining to Bazza (who has four boys) how you get girls. Keeper Jono managed to stop a full on shot from Cusack with his nose, which didn't even bleed, though probably if the temperature had been above freezing it might have. The new found Portuguese fans were teasing those Dutch descendents on how to succeed at the World Cup too, while JP was doing his best to show the Aussies how to really tackle when you're giving away a penalty, and Skins was learning fast! 27 June Aussie's out, thanks to an appalling ref's penalty decision with 8 seconds to go. 26 June Rangers
have the chance to get even with Taupo One, having drawn them at the Edgecumbe
Domain in the quarterfinals of the Tasman Bowl on July 22. Watch out Taupo,
Rangers will have remembered how to score goals by then!! Click
here to see the rest of the Tasman Cup, Bowl and Pullar Builders Cup
draws too. 25 June An even scoreless draw with Whakatane. Both sides went close, but neither could break the deadlock. Even Cusack's new white boots and JP's interesting haircut didn't bring any luck. Dean Butterworth rode his Harley into town, but only caught the last few minutes. Read the match report. 23 June The
Battle of the Builders tomorrow. Gary Fowell Builders Plains Rangers are
at home to Pullar Builders Whakatane. Adding the spice is Jason Pullar
of PB playing for GFB Rangers! Rangers will be without striker Harkey
de Lacy who is overseas for the next few weeks. Coach Cusack is threatening
to put himself up front and this might well be a good move with Cuse feeding
off Aaron Muggeridge and putting Simon Gowing back on the wing to terrorize
the fullbacks. 16 June Ex-Rangers player Ashley Hawkes is returning to the district in late July. Ashley is a professional actor in Auckland (very handy for those authentic dives in the penalty area!) and his sell-out play Milo's Wake is being staged in the Awakeri Events Centre 27, 28, 29 of July. Ash plays the son of an Irish immigrant Milo, who decides to hold his wake while he's still alive to enjoy it. Already, with minimal advertising, the Friday 28 show is sold out and the Saturday almost. If you want a ticket or to oder a pre-show Irish meal contact Viv Barr ph 3049704 or Peter Fitzgerald ph 3084536 or 3049506. Ash currently plays for Mt Albert Ponsonby when he has a free Saturday. Last year Milo's Wake sold out its six week season in Auckland, and it is starting a tour performing in Auckland, Kerikeri, Hamilton, Awakeri, Leigh and Dunedin. Don't miss it!! 10 June Rangers
all got to Taupo safely, had an entertaining kick around, with Cody slipping
over on the autumn leaves and Mark kicking the ball into Cusack's cup
of coffee. A strong cold wind down the pitch made the game interesting,
but Rangers couldn't put the ball in the net. Steve was yellow carded
for his tackle, but luckily the ref realised Bazza hadn't intentionally
copied Skin's one-armed body check. Read the
report. 7 June At the BOP meeting tonight a number of things were organised. BOP div three is to split into two sections, top 7 bottom 7, with points carried through at the end of the first round. The Tasman Cup and Bowl draws were also made, with Rangers getting a bye in the first round of the Bowl. Click here for the draws. 6 June The
game at Taupo this Saturday has an early kick-off (12.30pm) with
the refs doing the div one game between Taupo and Whakatane at 2.30 afterwards.
4 June A hard fought scoreless draw at Suburbs, though Rangers
dominated the second half, playing some good football. Tight defence and
a booming goalkeeper's kick kept Rangers out. Read the match
report. See a couiple of action pics. 2 June Rangers
longest time player Hori Elliot informed coach Brendan Cusack at training
last night that he was retiring (unless needed through shortages). Hori's
outstanding skills down the left wing and his crunching tackling have
been a major part of Edgecumbe teams for many years. Serious injuries
in the past few years have not put a dampener on Hori's love of the game,
and he has set a strong example to many. 30 May Norske Skog Tasman have given Rangers sponsorship towards replacing the goals on the Edgecumbe Domain. Thanks NS Tasman! Hopefully the WDC will look favourably on getting the field up to standard too. 29 May Rangers
game at Rotorua this Saturday is at the slightly later time of 2.30 pm.
Hopefully the game goes ahead. The Rotorua Coucil closed all soccer fields
last Saturday because of the weather and the resulting ground conditions.
28 May Rangers prevailed in a hard fought local derby in the mud
against Kawerau. Harley smacked two great goals and Cody saved a penalty.
Read the match report. 25 May Rangers
warmed up for their game with Kawerau with a demanding practice. Keeper
Cody impressed by saving a full blooded shot from Muggsy with his face! 24 May The All Whites lost to Hungary 2 - 0 with a good first
half showing. They have games against Georgia (28th), Estonia (1st June)
before the biggie v Brazil on 5th June, 4 am kickoff. 23 May The results and league tables are up to date, good to see Force Three are back providing results and also news that Soccer Talk is alive again after a rescue from new sponsors. 17 May How does he do it?? JP plays one game for us and gets a large photo all over the sports page of the Whakatane Beacon. Is he really that photogenic? 16 May Bad news. The excellent Soccer Talk magazine that has been produced for the last two years has just shut down, with not enough sales to sustain it. This is a great loss to NZ football. Well done to editor Glen Price for some outstanding reading over the time. 15 May Still no results available on Force Three website, in fact now they've replaced the results section with the old out-of-date draws! Take no notice! At least here we have got some results and the tables updated!! 13 May A good win at Opotiki, with great first up performances from Hori, JP, Peewee and Jono. Rangers even survived with the 11 players they had. A match played in fine spirit. Read the report. 11 May Jason Pullar has transferred back to Rangers from Whakatane and will take up the defensive sweeper role. Looks like Hori Elliot will be playing his first game for a long while against Opotiki on Saturday. That's good news for everyone who admires his left footed skills and tenacious style of play. Meanwhile Muggsy objected to the discussion after training of the possibilty of engraved mugs for player of the day. He reckoned he had enough trouble with injuries as it was. 9 May May 20th has had some catch-up games scheduled for it, otherwise a free weekend. It's free for Rangers. Check here. 8 May Happy 70th birthday to referee Norm Howe. "Play on" Norm you're doing great! 7 May A disastrous
second half, with Dylan and Harley both sent off ruined a battling first
half performance, with Rangers going down to a young Taupo side 5 - 2.
Here's the match
report. 4 May Another hard-out practice, getting ready for the visit of
unbeaten Taupo on Saturday. Richie was in unstoppable form. Hopefully
he still has some left for Saturday. Good to see Hori Elliot back at training,
after a long surgery / injury lay-off. 29 April A rather lucky 3 - 2 away win at Te Puke. Donald Rabbits scored the winner, though Richie wanted to keep it interesting, slicing a penalty wide with ten minutes to go. Rangers strikers were given instructions to not use birdcalls on the pitch, though they'd been wanting to try out Fury's communication techniques. Check out more of Lucy's cool match photos. Read the match report. 24 April Some new profiles are available, more info coming soon. 22 April Rangers
were taken to the cleaners by a very talented Fury side today. Fury, made
up of immigrants from three continents, took advantage of an inexperienced
backline to race to a 4 - 0 lead. Rangers were 6 - 0 down at the break
and playing with ten men for much of the second half, eventually lost
8 - 0. Here's the match
report. 11 April A number of changes to the season's draw have just come
out, including another team in div three and changes of dates due to some
calendar confusion. The changes have been updated on this site. All league
tables are up to date too. 8 April Rangers were a little lucky to open the scoring at Old Blues with an early penalty, a freakish Muggsy goal and then an own goal, but by the time Simon Gowing had put away a sweet fourth, it wasn't luck any more! Rangers, with a moderate breeze behind them went on to a 7 - 0 half time lead, then and 8 - 0 win. Goals to Richie (2), Harley (2), Muggsy (2), Simon and an unfortunate defender. The match report is here. It doesn't tell you how Cody got tangled in the net and was accused by Bazza of being a fish in his past life though! 2 April A good first up home win for Rangers. Coach Cusack took the whistle and had an easy ride as referee with both teams playing in a sporting spirit. Rotorua City took an early lead against the run of play, but a dominant performance from Rangers eventually brought the 4 - 1 win. Rangers, with captain Richie Nillesen leading the way, peppered the City goal with shots. Apart from the numerous wayward ones, the City keeper brought off several excellent saves. He also managed to locate the new match ball in the dense bushes behind the goal after a number of Richie's near misses. Read the match report. 30 March A
good full on training, ready for Saturday. Richie, Simon and Jeremy add
plenty of zing in attack. Afterwards, Cody and Donald are filling out
their registration forms, while Cusack is back out on the field in the
dark looking for a plastic bag with his keys in it. 29 March The full draw for all senior grades is here
(under link BOP results). 28 March Gary Fowell Builders have confirmed they are to be Plains Rangers major sponsor this year, with the team known as Gary Fowell Builders Plains Rangers, or GF Builders Plains Rangers for short! Welcome aboard Gary and Marina! Supporting sponsors are Little Orchard Pre-school, with Brian Skilling a long-time Rangers supporter and Four Seasons Whakatane, whom we welcome back from last season. 27 March The fun poll is updated. Have your say!! 23 March The draw for the season is out. Rangers are at home to Rotorua City in the first round on April 1st, 2pm kick-off. There are 13 teams contesting the division, with one full round to start the season. 20 March Rangers had an interesting preseason game with Whakatane Reserves on Saturday. Debut games for keeper Cody Hancox, who impressed with some good stops, Jono Kennedy, Corey Sanson and reappearances for Donald Rabbitts and Steve Vierboom. Unfortunate injuries to Steve and Corey. Doug Christensen of Kawerau helped out, working hard in the midfield and ex-Edgecumbe captain Matt Dalgity played against his Whakatane team to help out. Rangers were missing six players. The final score 6 - 1 to the strong Whakatane line-up. Matt Anderson scored from the penalty spot for Rangers against his own team ( he was playing for us in the final third). The debutants will be much the better for the run, but the injuries are unfortunate. 15 March Rangers
appeal to play in division two was unsuccessful, so being unable to do
justice to division one, Rangers are forced into playing in BOP division
three this season. The BOP meeting voted to stick with the format of eight
div one teams, knowing that neither Kawerau nor Rangers could field a
div one team. Then, with no clubs willing to take these places, no clubs
were promoted to the division, so div one now has a six team league. Sadly,
the "strictly by promotion and relegation" rule was applied
to Rangers, but not to any of the unwilling clubs who refused promotion.
But we won't complain too much, at least we were allowed to play in div
three! The high school sides in BOP div two are now wondering if they
will need to throw games so they won't get promoted up to div one and
have the same thing happen when they lose their players and have to rebuild
every second year. 13 March Rangers are featured in NZ's Soccer Talk magazine with
a small article written by Brian Smith of Rotorua about soccer in the
Eastern Bay. Rangers and Whakatane get a piece each of a positive article,
includes team photos. Copies of this excellent magazine are available
at most bookshops. 10 March A pre-season game is arranged for Saturday 18th, with Rangers hosting Finchy's div 2 team, 2.30pm kick-off. 9 March A good solid training with the teams characters shining
through. Muggsy shows off his gold boots to effect when he nutmegs Chopper.
Newcomer Cody "the Monk" Hancox impresses by wearing barefeet
to practice for the second week in a row. Sounds like the physical challenges
last week have earned Cody a safety bubble around him. Watch out opponents! 26 February Adelaide United, winners of the 3 rounds of the A League, have been tipped out in the semifinal play-offs, so Central Coast Mariners will travel to play Sydney FC in the final next Sunday. 23 February An Edgecumbe training back to its best. Determination
from Bas, Cuse and Muggs to field a team and the enthusiasm returns. Muggsy's
birthday means Bazza lets Muggs nutmeg him! Cusack manages a good header
despite wearing his peaked cap.The highs and lows of skills on display
make it all thoroughly entertaining. 19 February Rangers are struggling to get
a squad together for this season. Help! This in a season when we have
a keen major sponsor. 14 February
The Liverpool manager flies to Baghdad to watch a young Iraqi play 13 February NZer Simon Elliot helped his
premiere league club Fulham to a massive 6 - 1 win over West Brom. Elliot
is doing well in the holding midfield role and is making a good job of
taking the corners and free kicks too. 4 February The Knights end their dismal season with a 2 - 1 away loss to Melbourne. 1 February Plains Rangers first kick around for the season is tomorrow night!!! 6.30pm, then each Thursday at the same time. All welcome at the Edgecumbe Domain College Road. Ph 3222076 for more info. 28 January The Knights battle to a 1 - 1 draw, with runaway league
leaders Adelaide Utd, in their last home game of the A-League season.
How many of their players will be retained for next season? 23 January Proposed changes to the leagues....the Federation League may be scrapped meaning the BOP teams in it would drop into BOP div one, i.e. Taupo and Ngongotaha. Rotorua United could dissolve back into its contributing clubs Suburbs and City. The possible set-up of BOP leagues is: div one: 8 teams, div 2: 10 teams, div three: ten teams. All; this will be sorted out at BOP meeting 14 Feb at Litt Park Te Puke. 10 January Preseason 7 a-side tournament at Kawerau 11 February. Club meeting 1st Feb, the first day for training to follow soon after. 9 January 2006 The Knights deserved a draw, but lost to an 92nd minute goal away at Central Coast last night. In better news, a second Kiwi has signed for a Premier League club. Simon Elliot made his debut for Fulham last night. There is lots of fascinating news and trivia from 2005, 2004, 2003 and 2002 and beyond. Have a read! |
