Muddy conditions might have slowed down the play and sapped strength from the players' legs, but the good crowd, that watched Gary Fowell Builders Plains Rangers take on Kawerau Town on Saturday, were well entertained.
The young Kawerau team opened with spirit and put some pressure on the home team defence. However, tight marking by Kirk Bain on their dangerman Karl Storey meant they had to work hard to get into the Rangers defence. Rangers worked hard and got their passing game going. A good run through the midfield had captain Richie Nillesen tackled on the edge of the visitors' penalty area, the ball came free and Harley de Lacy smacked home a great goal for Rangers to take the lead. Later in the half, a lay-off from Rangers striker Aaron Muggeridge gave de Lacy another chance and he made no mistake, driving the ball underneath the keeper. Kawerau weren't about to give up though, they forced a number of corners through some nice buildup play. The quagmire that was the Rangers goal mouth made for some tricky moments, and Kawerau were awarded a penalty after a mistimed tackle. However, Cody Hancox pulled off a great save to keep out the spot kick.
Plains Rangers went into the half time break 2 - 0 ahead, but knowing there was still plenty to do.
The visitors gave it their all in the opening stanza of the second half, and when a Rangers clearance bounced back off an attacker, Kawerau slotted a shot inside keeper Hancox's near post. With the game in the balance, both teams gave it their all, attacks ranging from end to end. Ranger's sweeper Jason Pullar was instrumental in keeping his defence on task and eventually the experience of the home team gave them the upper hand for the last portion of the game. The final score Plains Rangers 2, Kawerau Town 1.
Both teams would be pleased with their efforts in trying conditions. Richie Nillesen was named player of the day for Rangers after a committed performance in centre-midfield. Bas Overdevest and Jason Pullar also had outstanding games.
