AFC Fury dished out a footballing lesson to Gary Fowell
Builders Plains Rangers on Saturday. Rangers had to travel to play the
league leaders with a below strength squad. A disorganised start to the
game gifted Fury some quick goals, leading to a 5 - 0 deficit at half
time.
Rangers got some grit back into their game after the break, with several
players battling on despite injuries and only one substitute available.
Bas Overdevest set an example with his tireless work in the centre midfield
despite an achilles injury. He robbed the Fury defence of the ball midway
through the half and squared it to striker Aaron Muggeridge. Muggeridge,
by this time, was also struggling but did enough to wrong foot the last
defender and score. That, and a spectacular overhead kick at goal from
the well performed Simon Gowing shortly afterwards, was about all the
hardy band of Rangers supporters had to cheer about. The final score:
Fury 7, Plains Rangers 1.
This Saturday Rangers will hope to have a bigger squad to call on when
they travel to play Tauranga Boys College. The College, with their focus
on the national secondary schools tournament, pulled off a major shock
on Saturday, downing previous co-leaders Te Puke 4 - 3. Rangers will hope
to get back to their best form to test them out.
