League leaders Katikati United were made to work hard
for their win when they played Gary Fowell Builders Plains Rangers at
Awakeri on Saturday.
Rangers, who are in a rebuilding phase this year, put in a determined
effort all round the park and kept the visitors at bay for the first half
an hour. Solid defence, backed up by another good display from young goalkeeper
Chris Johnston meant the talented Katikati attackers had to battle to
get openings. Eventually though they did score twice before half time.
Rangers came back in the second half and became the first team to score
against Katikati this season. Brandon Collier, who had a fine game on
the right wing, got a good ball into the box and Jordan Ogilvy happily
blasted it into the net. Captain Jason Pullar also went close, volleying
narrowly wide after holding off a defender in front of goal. However,
Katikati were not to be denied, and took out the game 5 - 1.
Jono Whitaker was named player of the day for his performance in centre
midfield. Others to shine were Mark Jeynes and Dylan Arthur. This Saturday
Rangers visit Te Puke and will look to continue the steady improvement
in the team's performance.
