Compensation is given to the New York Islanders for a trade gone bad with the old owner of the Toronto Mapleleafs. For this a third round draft pick was given to the New York Islanders. The pick is slotted after the Toronto Mapleleafs pick
July 21 1997:
The New York Rangers move to the Northeast Division to equal out the conference. Buffalo Sabre's owner Rick Cole "With the Rangers moving to the Northeast, it sets up a nice rivalry with the Sabres (me!), so Darren is quite happy to do that..."
The St Louis Blues move to the Pacific Division to equal out the conference. St Louis owner Bill McNeil "I will move to the other conference and I would prefer to do so"

Washington Capitals owner Joseph Pawlicki announces that the Capitals are interested in trading veterans from the team. Joe is looking for forward help. Any interest in any of the Capital veterans e-mail Joe, maybe we can work something out.

Free Agent draft update: The free agent draft starts on Thursday July 24, 1997. The teams that the the free agent pool are made up from are: Boston Bruins, San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings, Calgary Flames, Tampa Bay Lightning, Hartford Whalers
August 10 1997:
Dallas Stars owner Ken Perry announced that in an effort to bolster their offense they are entertaining offers on defensemen Sergei Zubov and Daryl Sydor.

St Louis Blues owner Bill McNeill and Vancouver Canucks owner Lloyd Alexander announce that all players on their teams are available to be trade. And are entertaining offers on them.
August 21 1997:
Washington Capitals owner Joseph Pawlicki announces that the Capitals are looking to upgrade at center and goaltender.

New Jersey Devils owner Art Caltababilota is offering every player except Doug Gilmour, Martin Broduer, and Scott Stevens.
August 30 1997:
Washington Capitals owner Joseph Pawlicki announces that Phil Housely is available. Anyone interested in an offensive defenseman to lead or help their powerplay? Washington is looking to package Housely along with their fifth round pick (third in that round) for a 3rd and 4th round pick. Any other offers will be considered.
September 4 1997:
New York Rangers owner Darren Yourk would like to announce that the Rangers are looking to deal a defenceman for some scoring help on the wings. Secondly, it should be known that Gretzky (the greatest ever no matter what Orr, Howe and Lemieux fans think) will retire a Ranger.
July 24th thru October 10th:
the five round draft of the six teams not selected happens and with the last pick by Colorado taking Mart McSorley.

Febuary 1st 1998:
Detroit Red Wings lose their fifth round pick in the re-entry draft for being over the salary cap at the end of the month of January. This was the decided by the league board and the arbitration committee minus John Lethbridge of the arbitration committee as he is the owner of the Red Detroit Red Wings.
March 1st 1998:
Phoenix Coyotes lose their fourth round pick (fifth traded) in the re-entry draft for having goalie Darcy Wakaluk over his allowed games.
April 1st 1998:
The first regular season for the Labatts Ice Cup League comes to an end with the following advancing to the playoffs. From the Eastern conference the Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, Buffalo Sabres, and the New York Rangers. From the Western conference the Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, St Louis Blues, and the Dallas Stars.

Ottawa Senators trade Alexei Yashin and Daniel Alfredsson to the Buffalo Sabres.
Sabres owner Rick Cole commented, "We really felt that the Sabres had a real need to upgrade our skill level and this trade accomplishes that goal. We want to return the style of this team to the glory years of the early 70's, when the Sabres were a fast, offensive, talented team led by the likes of the French Connection line. Bringing in two highly skilled athletes like Yashin and Alfredsson puts us closer to being the team we envision."
Senators owner David Landsman commented,We believe that this is a trade that will help both teams. This move changes the complexion and outlook of the Senators and Sabres. The Senators had to part with our two top players to do this deal, but we believe that Gratton and Dawe will add to the mix this season, and in the future.
