John Hufnagel, former head coach of the New Jersey Red Dogs, recently took a position with the NFL's Cleveland Browns as their quarterbacks coach. In his two years at the helm in New Jersey, Hufnagel's team accomplished many feats. He led the team to two straight playoff appearances and compiled an 18-13 overall record. Hufnagel guided the Red Dogs as they set the record for the fastest start ever for an AFL expansion team, (8-1 through the ninth week in 1997), and the record for most points scored in a game with a 91-62 win over the Texas Terror on June 15, 1997.
Q. How have you enjoyed your new position as Quarterbacks coach for the NFL's Cleveland Browns? A. I started beginning of February and things are going great. I am thrilled to be with the Browns.
Q. What is it like being with an NFL expansion team? A. It is exciting, but also very challenging with a new staff, a new team, and new players. It takes a while for everything to get in sync. With our situation here in Cleveland, we are not an expansion team in the true sense of the word. We have an existing fan base that is definitely anxious and hungry for the Browns to get back on the field. That in itself creates excitement, and it translates into my job.
Q. What are you thinking as you head in to the 1999 Draft, with the possibility of selecting a quarterback, perhaps Tim Couch, with your first pick? A. We are still in the process of trying to make the correct decisions. There are some excellent candidates out there. I have been evaluating players at local combines, and it will be a very difficult decision to make, if in fact we do draft a quarterback. Right now, I am looking forward to getting the players in here and starting our mini camps.
