CHICAGO (May 11, 1999) -- New Jersey Red Dogs wide receiver/defensive back Alvin Ashley has been named as the Arena Football League's Tinactin Ironman of the Week for Week Three. This feat give the Red Dog star back-to-back honors has the he was also named AFL's Player of the Week for his efforts in the win over Albany on May 2nd.
In the Red Dogs’ 41-39 win over the Buffalo Destroyers (0-2) this past Friday, Ashley (5-11, 150, Southwestern) had 16 receptions for 154 yards and four touchdowns to go along with four kick returns for 75 yards, four tackles, including two for a loss, two pass breakups and one sack. The Doggies stand at 2-1 and are in a three-way tie for first-place in the Eastern Division and hold the best record within the division at 2-0.
The sixth-year fan favorite ranks No. 1 this season in scoring (78 points), receptions (38), receiving yards (451), and touchdowns (13). In the last two contests, he played a part in the game-winning score, including a 14-yard grab with 8:41 to go in the win over Buffalo. He extended his streak of scoring at least one TD in a regular season game to 28, dating back to Week 4 of 1997. This was his third-straight 100-yard receiving game of the season. In a league internet poll, Ashley is second to only Orlando QB Browning Nagle (yes, the ex-NY Jets) as the best surprise in 1999.
Other candidates for Tinactin Ironman for Week Three included: Albany’s Carl Sacco, Arizona’s Randy Gatewood, Grand Rapids’ Michael Baker, Orlando’s Barry Wagner, and San Jose’s Shalon Baker.
