Dallas Stars: Model of Consistency While the Whalers are my all-time team, the Dallas Stars seemed to grow on me almost by accident. Believe it or not, I became a fan of the Stars from playing NHL94 for the Sega Genesis with my cousin. Watching them on TV when I could, I knew that their teams were always going to be consistently good, led by Mike Modano, Derian Hatcher, Jere Lehtinen and Ed Belfour. After the Whalers left for Carolina, the Stars became my adopted hockey team, so now I had a team to root for to win the Stanley Cup. In 1999, I was able to see it happen. While the game-winning goal scored by Brett Hull will always be considered controversial, it was awesome to finally see Modano and the Stars raise the Cup in triumph. While Hatcher and Belfour left for greener pastures, Modano and Lehtinen played alongside veterans such as Bill Guerin, Brendan Morrow (the current captain) and Marty Turco. While they shook off their first-round jinx in 2008, their quest for a second Cup was stalled at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings. Their consistent play over the years will eventually lead them to hoisting Lord Stanley's cup once again. |
