Ko-Budo

Picture of Bo Staff Kata
Ko-Budo, "Ancient Martial Way", is the study of indigenous Okinawan weapons. In ancient times when the Japanese forbid the Okinawans to carry swords, they developed a weapons system based on the farm implements they used to carryout their daily work in the fields. Today this weapons system is referred to as "Kobudo" or "Kobu-jutsu." This system employs a variety of weapons. Primarily the bo (staff), sai (short sword), nunchaku (flail), tonfa (handle), and kama (sickle). Most traditional dojos teach some form of weapons system as part of their Karate curriculum. Kobudo is a complete martial arts system of it's own.
