The start was delayed. Traffic south of Johannesburg was held up, and officials gave time enough for competitors to get to the competition change and be ready for the start.
Emphasis was placed on SYLLABUS. Adjudicators were asked not to mark any couple dancing out of syllabus, as this was unfair on those who trained according to the required syllabus. In the Gold Latin-American section, there were two disqualifications for dancing out of syllabus.
It is pleasing to note the number of studios that have addressed the matter of the dress code. Cathy Gibbons stated that the number would be noted of couples not adhering to the dress code, and the FEDANSA Board will address the matter further. Rumour has it that "Rumba in the Jungle" has been scheduled for December. Is there a doctor in the house to confirm that?... hope so.
From start to finish, the competition ran smoothly. Competition was really tough. Officials required 12 couples for a semi-final, and on quite a few occasions extra sessions were squeezed in as the three adjudicators brought 15 couples back for the next round. A semi-final thus became a quarter-final. As a result, many competitors found themselves dancing four rounds in short succession, and here fitness and stamina were certainly brought into play.
There was great participation from the spectators, encouraging their children/friends to ‘give it their all’. I noticed a dancer, drenched in sweat after three grueling rounds come smiling to his supporters. “That was really great!” he said. “I heard you guys, and from there and there,” he pointed to other supporters. “It really gives you that extra boost, thanks!” And he wasn’t the only one. “Ma se mooiste kind!” bellowed an excited mother, egging on her child.
