The “Rainbow 2000” Ballroom and Latin American Competition and World Selection Trial Event, took place at the Scholtz Hall, University of the Free State on Saturday, 01 April 2000.  The only ‘April Fools’, were those participants who had entered, but hadn’t arrived, and those who thought about entering, and did not.

"The Free State Amateur Dance Association would like to thank the following Studios for their continued and loyal support, making this an all time record in the number of entries which is a great start to the new millenium."

So begins the programme for the Rainbow 2000 Festival, and this opening statement says it all.  60 studios all around the country, from the Eastern, Western and Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, North West Province, Mpumalanga, and Free State, entered for this event.

Over 460 entries were received for this competition, with the Adult Bronze Ballroom and Latin American sections drawing the largest amount of contestants (28 and 33 entries per section respectively).  There were 141 entries in the Juvenile and Junior medal grade categories for Ballroom and Latin American, 208 entries for the Youth, Adult, Senior and Masters Medal grade Ballroom and Latin American sections and 117 entries for the dress sections, Ballroom and Latin American.

The floor was very slippery, and some holes were patched with duct tape.  Bill Toseland apologized for the condition of the floor. FEDANSA officials had only inspected the floor for the first time on the Friday night.  Dancers were warned to be careful.  The hall was well lit for both the day and evening events.

The music by “Absolute Entertainment” was absolutely fabulous.  The selection of music had the spectators tapping their feet, eager to dance themselves.

The Juvenile and Junior sessions stepped off right on time.  Contestants were careful to arrive early, and many had gathered in front of Scholtz Hall well in advance of 10:00.  The sections ran relatively smoothly throughout the morning.  Some contestants held up sections by being late for their sessions, and almost running onto the floor just as the music had started.  Dancers, this is BIG NO, NO!

The sessions ran without a break all through to the Prize Presentation of the Junior and Juveniles medal grades, Bronze to Gold.

After a short break, the Youth Silver Ballroom section stepped off for the next phase of the competition.  There were no breaks for the rest of the day until the Prize Presentations at the end Youth to Masters medal grades.

Trophies were given only to the First, Second and Third places in the Medal Grades.  All the contestants that had reached the Final, and had been awarded Fourth Place and lower, were given Certificates for being a Finalist in the “Rainbow 2000” Festival.

I waited with baited breath for FEDANSA to step in regarding the strict dress codes.  I was under the impression that NO variations to the dress code will be tolerated as of 1st April 2000.  There was a blatant disregard for the dress code in the medal sections by quite a few studios. Either that, or utter ignorance.  It was only much later in the day, when Bill Toseland announced that the contestants’ numbers had been noted, and the studio heads will be informed just what the dress code is, what will be allowed and what will not.

The hall was cleared and cleaned before the highlight of the evening.  Spectators and dancers eagerly awaited the first Battle for the Champion of the Champions.  The “Rainbow 2000” Festival is the first of a series of World Trial Selection events.  Here, couples must compete in at least three of these events, scoring points for First, Second and Third places.  The couple with the highest score in their section (Junior, Youth, Adult, Senior & Masters Ballroom and Latin American) will represent South Africa in the World Trial Events.

The dancing was a treat to behold.  The stunning outfits and spectacular dancing was wonderful.  Spectators and supporters cheered on their favourite couple.  During the Latin Championships, excitement was at a pitch.  And then, we waited for the results.

And would you believe it!  The winning couple for the Adult Latin Championships, Grant Simpson and Hayley Hammond were booed!  Booed by unhappy spectators from the Cape!  What a slap in the face for the judges.  Bill Toseland, I applaud you for your calm manner during this outrageous display of deplorable behaviour. I have always believed the judges decision is final.

Outside, on the way back to the car, there was plenty of chittering and chattering.  I was behind one person, and this is what she had to say, speaking to her daughter : “I am sorry we came all this way from the Cape for you to get such a raw deal!”  The daughter, bearing her 2nd place trophy, with tears in her eyes, tried hard to console her mother, “It’s alright, Ma, Second Place is great.  This is only the first competition.”  “No, this was cooked, that couple had it in the bag all the time, I don’t know why they even bothered to dance!”

I was stunned, shocked.  What was with these people?  What was in the bag? The panel of judges was obviously carefully chosen.  And in my humble and personal opinion, I believe that the rotation of the judges from the North West (viz Khagiso Ntseane and Salome Sechele) ensured a fair deal.  To take this even one step further, Raymond Bulpitt (Zimbabwe) and Miranda Botha (Eastern Cape) also took the floor in turns.  With Fred McCann taking the floor from the first dance in the Junior and Juvenile sections, all the way through to the last of the Championships, this ensured that there were three judges on the floor all the time.  Fred McCann was the one and only adjudicator from Gauteng.

I hope that such bad sportsmanship from dancers and supporters will not spoil any competitions in the future.
