LICHFIELD NOMADS CRICKET CLUB
2000 Report
Akin Husseins successful tenure as captain has come to an end with his second season, injuries aside, achieving 7 wins with 7defeats. A club record of 8 fixture cancellations was also a factor in denying him a chance of a winning season and his players a free curry. 3 victories from the first 3 games of the season (completing a run of 6 wins in 7 matches) culminated in victory over Lichfield Friary Grange CC in the second "Stewert Ellison Trophy" match. This was a low scoring game with the Lichfield Friary Grange total of 71 falling short of the Lichfield Nomads modest total of 100-9. P Fearon bowled a performance of the year award winning 4-12 to ensure victory. The club again toured Belgium in May with a prestigious fixture played against Royal Brussels CC at Waterloo and an "indoor" cricket match, which ended in a tie, at Mechelen Leisure Centre against Mechelen Eagles CC.
P Gardner was again the clubs best batsman achieving 687 runs at 40.41 with innings of 95, 77 and 83 against Swynnerton, Trentside and Beaudesert respectively. M Pinfield produced a fine 360 runs at 30.00 batting at number 4 with his 53* from a match abandoned total of 83-4, at Woore, the highlight. M Heslington, after a bad start to the season, scored 315 runs at 19.69 with fifties at Royal Brussels and Bugbrooke. There were also good batting contributions from D Forster and P Fearon.
All of the clubs main bowlers contributed well during the season. Hussein kept his varied opening attack with Heslington taking 26 wickets at 14.19 and Forster, enhancing his all round contribution to the club giving 17 wickets at 21.53. However the support bowling produced the best match performances. K Greaves, who took a match winning 5-6 at Swynnerton and 3-3 against Beaudesert, produced 16 wickets at 16.44. J Hoddy, 4-22 against Cannock Wood and 3-0 against Norton Selly Oak, gave 14 wickets at 20.79 and Fearon finished the season with 13 wickets at 20.54.
Fielding was dominated by catching ability. Hussein contributed 6 whilst Greaves took the most in the season with 8. Nomad of the Year Forster completed his all round performance with 7 and the 13 dismissals by Wicketkeeper Gardner earned him the fielder of the year trophy.
The Nomads, for once, looked smart this season having invested in shirts, sweaters and caps emblazoned with the club logo.
Next year will be the clubs 20th season. With a trophy to defend and a new captain, lets hope its successful.
