Nomads 159 for 6 off 40
overs. (Gardner 32, Higginson 27*,R. Wild 2-6, Bishton 2-37 ) Woore 160 for 2 from 36.5 overs (D. Snape 116*, Forster 1-24, Moss 1-36) On a beautiful day at Woore, Hoddy won the toss and elected to bat allowing his team to work on their sun tans. High spirits were dampened by the news that the club pro was playing to obtain some batting practice, although he had promised not to bowl his fast stuff. Gardner and Heslington got off to a good start scoring at over 5 per over albeit Gardner had survived one simple and one difficult catching chance. However in the 9th over Heslington had his bails sent cartwheeling by Bishton for 15. Moss arrived at the wicket but his performance seemed subdued perhaps affected by over indulgence the night before. Gardner rode his luck once too often and a faint tickle down the leg side saw the keeper atone for his earlier drop hanging on to a good catch to see Gardner out for 32. The entry of Pinfield also saw the introduction of Woores wily old spinner R Wild. who applied the brake to the scoring with a spell of 8-5-6-2. Moss lost patience and was caught off Owen. Hussein, deciding on a policy of attack, was out lbw, first ball, to Wild. Hoddy lasted only a little longer and was bowled by a ball pitching on leg stump and hitting the top of off. Pinfield had seen off the threat of Wild and was beginning to attack when he hit a catch straight to the pro and was out for 20. Higginson and Forster made the most of a less potent bowling attack with 27no and 11no respectively to attain a respectable score of 159-6 albeit one which looked short of a winning total on a ground with an infamous short boundary. Higginson and Forster opened the bowling against Burton and Snape (pro) and bowled well but with little luck. Catches just evaded fielders and Gardner failed to hang on to an edge down the leg side from Snape off Forster - a costly miss. Greaves added to his tally of catches taking Burton off Forster. Moss replaced Higginson and saw a number of inside edges by the batsmen miss the stumps. He eventually took the wicket of Thorley aided by a good catch by Forster who saw the ball late. The opposition were running well between the wickets and were cruising to the total with 100 off 21 overs. Hoddy decided to bring on Greaves to try to change things. The batsmen seemed confused by the lack of pace and so Hoddy brought himself on at the other end. A fatal error!! Snape found Hoddy completely to his liking and hit 3 sixes off the over which cost 21 runs. Greaves next over only cost 4 and a shell-shocked Hoddy kept himself on and saw 2 more sixes and 15 runs off his next over. Pickering bowled the last over to see Woore reach their total off 27.4 overs. Although Nomads never looked like winning this match, it must be said that we did not have much luck with edges and catches. Also it can be seen that the absence of the pro Snape would have made the game more of an even contest. |
