Howie Morenz

  • Played for the Canadians from 1923-24 to 1936-37
    (except 1934-35).
  • Scored his first NHL goal against the Ottawa Senators on December 26, 1923.
  • Led the Canadians in Goal scoring for 8 straight seasons (1924-25 to 1931-32).
  • Led the NHL in points in two seasons and goal-scoring in three
  • Morenz becomes the first Montreal Canadian to win the Hart Trophy in April 1928.
  • Won the Hart in 1931 and 1932 also.
  • Scores 5 goals against the New York Americans on March 18, 1930
  • Morenz breaks his leg in a game against Chicago on January 28, 1937.
  • Dies from complications of the broken leg on March 8, 1937.
  • Many people say he died of a broken heart because he believed he would never recover well enough to play for Montreal again.
  • His funeral is held at the Monreal Forum and 15 000 people attend.
  • Elected to the NHL Hall of Fame in April 1945.
  • Voted the best hockey player of the first half century by hockey
    writers in 1950.
  • Ranked as the 15th best player of All-Time by the Hockey News (1998).
