Jean Beliveau ("Le Gros Bill")


  • One of the most respected players ever to play in the NHL.
  • Played for the Quebec Aces of the Quebec Senior League before joining Montreal.
  • Le Colisee (Nords) was nicknamed the "House that Beliveau Built".
  • The Habs bought the entire Quebec league to ensure his rights.
  • Holds the Montreal record for fastest 3 goals at 44 seconds vs Terry Sawchuck on Nov 5, 1955.
  • Won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's leading scorer in 1956.
  • Beliveau also won the Hart Trophy in 1956 as league MVP.
  • Won his first Stanley Cup as a Montreal Canadien in 1955-56.
  • Named captain of the Habs for the 1961 season, after Doug Harvey was traded. The Cup
  • Jean won the Hart trophy again in 1964.
  • First winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as Playoff MVP in 1965.
  • Jean finished fourth in games played for the Habs with 1125 games.
  • Jean has 712 Assists (2nd all-time) and 507 goals (3rd all time) with Montreal.
  • Finished with 1219 career points (behind only Guy Lafleur) Retired #4
  • Played in a total of 20 seasons for Montreal.
  • Finished his career with 176 playoff points, a Montreal team record.
  • Jean won 10 Stanley Cups as a player with Montreal and another 7 as a member of Montreal management.
  • Jean was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame in June, 1972
  • The Hockey News (1998) named Beliveau the #7 player of All-Time
