On This Day, March 2nd 1992
Ryne Sandberg becomes baseball's highest paid player, signing a five-year $30.5 million contract with the Chicago Cubs.
He plays second base like Yo-Yo Ma plays cello. He is the only man EVER to win nine Gold Gloves at that postion... He once played in 123 consecutive games without an error... He has hit 40 home runs in a season, stolen 50 bases in another, and no one else in Major League history can say that.
Steve Rushin
The one constant through all the years has been BASEBALL. America has
rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a
blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But BASEBALL has marked the time.
This field, this game, is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that
once was good and it could be again.
James Earl Jones, "Field of Dreams" - 1988
