After meeting with the Gobe brains trust well into the morning of November 8 it was agreed that management of the Group should revert to those still working at HWT where the Group had its origins in 1978. This should also ensure continuation of the Gobe in the face of the ageing of the membership and the need to consider attracting new members.
President Whitey also stood down.
Sod takes over as Tournament Director while Kneb will assist as ceremonial President.
They will take charge immediately and Sod has begun work planning the next Gobemouche tournament.
Both have been guaranteed the support of existing members.

Tournament reports
Organised Mini Gobemouches ceased after the 2007 event and left to ad hoc arrangements during the year. Barnbougle in Tasmania is on the agenda for the first half of 2009. Anyone interested in taking part (probably a mid-week excursion) can contact Flog or BB (who probably will be in Australia at that time!).
We welcomed two Gobemouche Legends to our 30th anniversary tournament on November 7-9 ... TV (all the way from Queensland) and Sav-ho (all the way from Glen Waverley). Mudrake also was on hand to entertain the troops at lunch and his flash-in-the-pan bird trick had to be seen to be believed. No animals or children were hurt in the performance. Ten members took advantage of a therapeutic massage after the first round - a sign of the ageing process no doubt.
That meant 14 players contested the two rounds of the 2008 championship. Rain was of nuisance value on Friday and Saturday but Sunday was a near-perfect day. RESULTS
Friday pairs: The Rock (all the way from Sydney) and PVH 58 points, Big Phela and Whitey 42, Flog and Bookie 40, Drum and Botch DNF.
Masters singles: What a hotly contested event this was. Kneb fired in 36 points on Day 1 after his usual Friday night preparation to lead from Drum by one point and Right Bloke another 3 points back. The Bookie faced a complete wipeout if Kneb went on with the job. But whetever possessed Kneb to deviate from his normal second round preparation on Saturday night remains unclear. Obviously jugs of water are not his go and he collapsed spectacularly on Sunday to card just 24 points for the day. The rot started early in the round and Ziggy loomed briefly as a threat but couldn't maitain his pace for the second nine. All this left Right Bloke and Drum to fight it out. The result went right down to the wire - Right Bloke getting up with a pressure putt on the last hole. He finished with a two-day total of 67, one clear of the Drum. Sod won the Sunday Best trophy with a fine 37 points.
Pairs: The pairs event in conjunction was as usual hotly contested. Drum and Ziggy led after the first day with 64 points from Flog and Right Bloke on 61. A great contest loomed on Sunday - With Drum and Right Bloke expected to maintain their form, Flog needed to overhaul Ziggy but found the going too tough.p> Drum and Ziggy posted 127 points, five clear of Flog and Right Bloke. Rock took them in the Calcutta and sub-let some of his outlay to them - so all were well pleased with the result.

The Hollow Legs award went to Echo for the unpardonable sin of forgetting to bring the jacket. There were some serious contenders otherwise and they were lucky to escape. That means you, Drum.

A dozen players contested the 2007 event with Echo trying to defend his 2006 singles title.
The singles championship was tight in the finish with Big Phela taking a two shot lead over Sod into the last day. But Drum wasn't to be denied and a top score for the day of 38 points took him into the joint lead where he defeated Big Phela on a countback. The Pairs also was a hotly contested event. BB and Ziggy led after the first day but were run down by Kneb and Flog who won by a point from Sod and Lockerbie.

The Gobemouchers ventured away from Shepparton for the first time, going east to Mirboo North in Gippsland. We found it most welcoming, even though the hilly course may have had an adverse effect on our life expectancy.
Drum and Bookie's navigational skills in the dark were a highlight of the social scene, after a night at the brewery of course.
As for the golf, Echo turned in a remarkable performance to show a clean pair of heels.
Champion: Echo with 66 points over the two days. Runner up: Bookie, 60 poibnts.
Pairs champions: Echo and Feelin Groovy with 123 points from Bookie and Drum 114.

A field of elite golfers contested the Mini. The three-man ambrose at Tatura on the Friday was won by Echo, Whitey and the Bookie.
Singles: The Right Bloke posted a two-stroke lead over Drum in the first round. He had 34, Drum 32, Bookie 29, Flog 28, BB 26, Echo 23, Lockerbie 18, and Spin Doctor Whitey 16.
That set things up for an interesting final day. Drum and Right Bloke fought it out but while they were going at it out in front the Spin Doctor turned on the biggest form reversal seen in many years.
Drum, despite a rum drinking championship performance the previous night held together over the 16th, 17th and 18th to post 37 points for a total of 69, two clear of the Right Bloke whose second-day 34 gave him 67.
But all was not lost for the Right Bloke. The Spin Doctor's outstanding second day effort of 32 points gave him and the Right Bloke a comfortable win in the pairs.
Final scores: Drum 69, Right Bloke 67, BB 53, Spin Doctor and Flog 48, Bookie 47, Lockerbie 42 and Echo 40.
Pairs: Right Bloke and Spin Doctor 115, Drum and Echo 109; BB and Flog 101, and Bookie and Lockerbie 89. Non playing captain Bluey was BOG, having spent most of the weekend very close to it.
Fifteen players contested the 2005 Masters. And we welcomed Legends Terry Vine and Ken Savage as well as Mudrake who demonstrated yet again that comedy comes in many guises. We also thank Say it Phonetically for arranging the shirts with Austral Credit Union - and we thank them for their support.
It was an action packed weekend, one we'll remember for some time. The Bookie will be one of those with mixed emotions but undoubtedly he will hit back. Our efforts at cracking the Lotto millions also came to nought.
CANADIAN FOURSOMES, Hilltop on Friday, November 4: Lockerbie and All Gone 69.5 were the winners from Drum and The Botch on 72.5; Flog and Feelin Groovy 74.5; Sod and Say it Phonetically 77.5; Too Hard Basket and Rolling Stone 77.5; and Spin Doctor and Bookie 81.

MASTERS PAIRS: Some interesting pairings but in the end the winners won well. Say it Phonetically and Sod posted 117 points, followed by Rolling Stone and Right Bloke on 111; Lockerbie and the Bookie on 107; Flog and All Gone 97; Spin Doctor and Drum 96; Botch and Feelin' Groovy 95; and Smokin' Joe and Too Hard Basket 79; Right Bloke and Ex Il Presidente DNF.
THE SINGLES: What a topsy-turvey tournament this turned out to be. Sod was heavily backed but after the first day trailled Drum by 5 points.Also well in the picture were the Bookie with 30 and the Right Bloke with 29.
The rest, though not out of it, had plenty to do on the second day. The top four from day one were put in the last grouping and what a grandstand finish they gave the rest of us. Sod and Right Bloke were even as they hit off on the last hole. The Bookie and Drum had already developed a speed wobble by then, although the lead changed regularly around the course. But the last hole proved the difference - Sod had a shot and the Right Bloke put himself under enormous pressure by dumping his approach in the right-hand bunker beside the 18th. That was his undoing - bunker to bunker to bunker and Sod was the winner - his first Masters success since 1991.

THE JACKET: The Gobemouche was pleased to recognise Too Hard Basket's golf ettiquette in remembering to rake the bunker after his excursion into it on the 18th and he'll hold the Jacket for the next year.
An elite field of golfers contested the Mini Gobemouche at Shepparton on March 23-24. Scores were suprisingly low considering the ideal conditions - 27 degrees and fine and clear all weekend.
Too Hard Basket set the early pace with 27 points on Saturday to lead by 3 from Bookie and Botch. The pairs event was set up nicely with Spin Doctor and Bookie and Too Hard Basket and Lockerbie both posting 47 points going into the second day.
There were a few moves in the field on Sunday but Too Hard Basket managed to match them and hold on for his first tournament win in several years. He and Lockerbie cleaned up in the pairs, too.
All Gone starred on the nearest-the-pins, winning four of them over two days. Flog managed three longest drives.
There were a number of highlights off the course - Flog's Golf Rage on Saturday night; Nige's account of being misquoted in the media, Echo and All Gone being locked out of their room all night Friday etc.

A field of elite athletes assembled at Hilltop, Tatura, on Friday afternoon, November 5. The Gobemouche Canadian Foursomes Championships was held under menacing skies but all escaped the downpours that soaked the Goulburn Valley through the weekend.
Winners on 67 were Echo and the Right Bloke. The Right Bloke's early form should have tipped us off to what was to come on the Sunday, but more of that later.
It was a tight finish in the foursomes with Feelin' Groovy and the Rollin Rock only half a shot away in second place.p>
Saturday saw the elite squad of 19 - including new member Chairman Gene - plus two retired members ensconsed at Shepparton. Feelin'Groovy set the early pace. His first round 34 points made him the player to catch - he held a 3-shot lead over the sleeper in the field, PVH. What was to come on Sunday was nothing short of sensational. The Right Bloke proved you can't believe all you hear (particularly from him) and rose up out of the pack with a magnificent 41 points after only 29 on Saturday. Off a handicap of 11 his 78 strokes nett shot him clear of the pack with a two-round total of 70 stableford points, one of the few times a player has scored 70 points in 26 years of the tournament.
PVH fell just two shots short after his excellent second round score of 37 points.

As always the pairs was full of interest early> After the first day two teams were neck and neck - The Drum and Say it Phonetically led by 2 from Feelin' Groovy and the Botch. But the leaders shot clear on the second day to finish with 131 points, well clear of Feelin' Groovy and the Botch on 115, just one clear of BB and Chairman Gene. Then came: Bookie and Little Drop on 108, Right Bloke and Echo 106, PVH and Spin Doctor on 102, All Gone and Flog 96, Sod and Lockerbie 92 and Silver Tongue and Rolling Rock 85.
As usual the Hollow Legs award was hotly contested. The Drum narrowly avoided having to wear the jacket in perpetuity, for having forgotten to bring it. But the worthy winner was Silver Tongue.
It was cold enough to freeze the balls off the 10th green but we persevered. A field of 9 contested the 1004 Mini Gobemouche over the Anzac weekend.
The Drun proved too good, setting up his win with 37 in the cold on Saturday. He had a bit of a speed wobbe on Sunday but he wasn't alone so his 31 was good enough for a 68 total, 11 clear of the Bookie and 14 clear of Flog.

The Botch and Drum seemed to have set up an unassailable lead in the pairs on Saturday when they were 23 points clear of the next best. But Botch figured in one of the biggest second-day collapses we have seen, going from 35 points to 18. Nevertheless, no one else came good and they held on to take the pairs by 20 points. Pairs rundown: Botch and Drum 121, BB and Lockerbie 101, Drum and Whitey 98, All Gone and Flog 96, and Bookie and Echo 90.
The three-man ambrose at Tatura on a rainy and dark Friday went narrowly to the latecomers who played both their rounds in the afternoon and finished in the dark: Drum, Bookie and Whitey.
The Gobemouchers welcomed Il Presidente (retired) into the ranks of Gobemouche Legends, joining Sav-ho.
Twenty-three players took part and welcomed Il Presidente (retired), Sav-ho (retired) and Bluey (retired) as spectators. They came from near and far – three came from Queensland (one driving from Airlie Beach) one from Sydney and the rest from various parts of Victoria.
The official start was lunch on Friday, including presentation of the Show Bags. Then it was on to the course for the Jubilee Ambrose. Winners, on 58 5/8 points were The Right Bloke, Rolling Stone, Botch and Lockerbie, from Sod, The News, PVH and Little Drop (55 4/8).
Friday night brought the official Jubilee barbecue on the lawns of the motel. Master chefs Echo and All Gone were presented with their official uniforms. The Right Bloke was also presented with a mounted card recognising the best ever round at the Gobemouche, 73 off the stick for 47 points in the first round of the 2002 Masters.
The usual festivities followed with The Botch and Feelin Groovy emerging as pre-post favourite in the pairs.
The first round of the championship began in fine conditions on Saturday morning. A large number of players managed scores in the 30s, with Ron the Con and PVH (in a welcome return to form) sharing overnight-leader honours on 36 points.
All Gone turned in his best Shepparton round with 34, with Feelin Groovy, Right Bloke and Flog on 33. Then on 32 we saw How Now and the drum and Silver Tongue, Sod and Spin Doctor all on 30. A close battle seemed assured in the second round.
The pairs, too, loomed as titanic contest. Flog and Right Bloke led after the first day 66 points, just 3 clear of Big Foot and All Gone. The heavily favoured Botch and PVH were on 56, in equal fourth place.
Saturday lunch saw the cutting of the Jubilee cake. The putting competition for the Golden Axminster was held in the heat on Saturday afternoon. The Bookie proved an astute judge and took the prize in a putt-off with Lockerbie and Spin Doctor.
Saturday afternoon also saw the Gobemouche sponsor prizes for the Shepparton Golf Club’s President v Captain’s Trophy and some memorable speeches by all parties, including our own President, Bookie.
Then it was down to Spaghetti Hollow (Legs) for the Jubilee dinner and a taste of the Gobemouche Shiraz Cabernet, an excellent dinner and a look at the Wallabies trouncing the All Blacks, much to the chagrin of a couple of our number who were of NZ heritage.
Back to the track on Sunday and the weather looked like it might be a factor. We went from bright sunshine and 34 degrees to cloud and wind and 20-something degrees.
Ron the Con (a foundation member making his first appearance for 25 years) showed Saturday was no fluke and posted 39 points on Sunday to run away with the major prizes – a trip (including golf) to Laguna Whitsundays and the signed Bradman print. His total of 75 points was one of the highest winning scores at a Gobemouche (something in the high 60s usually is good enough).
Flog’s 37 points on Sunday was good enough to snare second place for a total of 70 points.
The A grade winner on a countback was PVH with 66 and B Grade winner was Iron Mike on 61 points.
The Right Bloke thought is 26 points on Saturday might not have been good enough to help win the pairs (well, it was 21 points less than his record round last year) but Flog’s 37 gave the pair a total of 129 to hold off The Botch and Feelin Groovy on 123.
Ron the Con cleaned up by also winning the Sunday Best Prize and PVH took the Saturday Best on a countback.
The Never there Trophy was won by The News.

Ten players contested the 2003 Mini. On the Sunday they experienced conditions not previously seen at Shepparton – rain all day. The rain established one clear fact – The Drum isn’t a wet tracker. He held a commanding lead over All Gone after Saturday’s play – 34 points to 29. It was All Gone’s best morning round at Shepparton, but he couldn’t go on with it on Sunday even when the Drum faltered. But Drum did enough for a further 24 points to stave off a solid finish by Flog and the Bookie to take the title.
Drum’s performance on Saturday confirmed once again that you can be wet on the inside and still play well but it’s a different matter when you are wet on the outside. Needless to say the carry-over Hollow Legs points for the Masters will have a story to tell.
Drum finished with 58 points from Flog (56) and the Bookie (54).
Only nine players faced the starter in the rain on Sunday and play began half an hour late. After nine holes, three more players felt they were out of the contest and didn’t need a soaking.
By this stage the competition in the pairs had hotted up so the six players still in with a crack at the “pot” set off into the soaking rain accompanied by a lame stray dog. The dog played no small part in proceedings – treading Flog’s ball into the wet sand of a bunker on the 17th, nudging the Bookie’s ball away from Whitey’s on the 17th green to give Whitey the nearest-the-pin and causing an incident with Drum on the same hole that raised questions about who might have bitten whom.
With 9 holes to go, Drum and White led the pairs narrowly from Flog and the Bookie and Lockerbie and All Gone. The 10th hole turned that around with F and B taking the lead and increasing it for the rest of the round to win by 15 points.

A small but elite field contested the Masters on November 23-24. Proceedings were complicated because of the fact that the joint jacket holders had to return to Melbourne on Saturday afternoon for other functions. One’s own significant birthday is only just an excuse for such conduct. The other had to join two other Gobemouchers (Rock and Feelin Groovy) at a Golf Writers awards night where they collected major trophies. We managed to accommodate Silver Tongue in the pairs only by allowing him to play his first round at Tatura where he recorded a respectable 39 points. But the highlight was the Right Bloke who, playing of 12, turned in a one-over-the card 73 off the stick at Shepparton on Saturday for a massive 47 points. He would have won the Shepp Club’s comp by three points. As it was he finished fifth the in the Gobemouche singles, four people failing to match him in their two-round totals. But the tournament winner was the Bookie – four wins in a row. He turned in 70 points to hold off the Botch on 68, Lockerbie on 63, BB on 55, Josep on 49, the Right Bloke on 47, Flog on 45, Echo on 43, All Gone on 41 and Spin Doctor on 40. Silver Tongue’s one round at Shepparton returned 25 points. It was a pleasure to welcome back Echo to competition and to see Gobemouche Living Legend Sav-ho present on Friday and Saturday. Botch and Lockerbie won the pairs with 131 from Bookie and Echo on 113, Silvertongue and Josep on 103, BB and Spin Doctor on 96 and All Gone and Flog on 86. The worthy winner of the Hollow Legs jacket was Spin Doctor who managed to leave his buggy behind twice at Tatura, put in a blank card and pay for his purchase in the Calcutta from the Botch’s wallet. We welcomed two new members this trip – How Now and Homf. Both showed enough to indicate they’ll be a force in many aspects of Gobemouche life, but particularly in the Hollow Legs division.
The Bookie won the singles with 61 to set up the chance of a picket fence in his formline. He just held of Little Drop and the Botch who both had 60, Flog with 59, BB with 53, How Now with 52, Lockerbie with 49, All Gone with 44 and Spin Doctor with 40. Homf returned a DNF and will be subject to a fitness test before being allowed to resume.

Fortunately Kneb, who had previously been awarded the original jacket on perpetuity was on hand to lend his jacket to Old Silver Tongue for the year. The Right Bloke cut a striking figure in the brand new jacket.
We did manage some golf. The singles winner was El Presidente (aka The Bookie) with a total of 72 points. The Right Bloke came second (evidence that was withheld from the E and M committee’s deliberations) with 66 points and Sod was third with 65. The final rundown was: Bookie 72, Right Bloke 66, Sod 65, Little Drop 64, Feelin Groovy 62, Kneb, Lockerbie and Silver Tongue 61, Botch and Drum 59, The Rock and BB 55; Jackson 52, Flog 51, Spin Doctor and Josep 47, and All Gone 45.
