Saturday 7th June 1997
It's a sad day today and I couldn't hold back the tears. Martina lost in the final against Iva Majoli 4-6 2-6. I can't believe it! It looked like her long semi- finals matches for the singles and doubles really took a lot out of her. Martina took a break to the dressing room and was also treated for cramps in the final set, but it didn't break the concentration of Iva. Martina wasn't playing as well as we all know she can play and suffered as a result. Martina's winning streak of 38 WTA matches has come to an end.
Martina, we will always support you, through all the good times and all the bad times. We will always love you. You can show everybody what you are made of at Wimbledon! You are still the best in our opinion! We'll be there for you forever!
Please sign my Guestbook and tell me your feelings about this shock defeat or anything you want about Martina.
Friday 6th June 1997
Martina and Arantxa lost to Gigi Fernandez and Natasha Zvereva 6-3 6-7 (3-6) 8-10. This was a very long match, and a very draining match. I just hope that it doesn't take too much out of Martina for the final tomorrow.
Thursday 5th June 1997
Martina played poorly today, but still beat Monica 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 6-4 in a match which lasted 2 hours and 18 minutes. Both played badly, with Monica making 71 unforced errors and Martina making 50. Another close match for Martina, which sets her up to play Iva Majoli, the number 9 seed who beat Amanda Coetzer today, in the finals.
Wednesday 4th June 1997
Martina and Arantxa beat the number 7 seeds, Yakuk Basuki and Caroline Vis in straight sets today, 7-6 (7-3) 7-5. Arantxa served for the match at 5-4, and after several match points and deuces, they lost their serve, but won the next two games to take the match. This victory sets them up to play Gigi Fernandez (USA) and Natasha Zvereva (BLR), the number 1 seeds in the semi-final.
Tuesday 3rd June 1997
Martina played brilliantly today to beat her doubles partner, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in straight sets. The score was 6-2 6-2, but the match was much closer than it suggests. Martina's Win/Loss Record of '97 is now an incredible 39-0. Martina's opponent in the semi-final will be the number 3 seed, Monica Seles (USA), who beat Mary Joe Fernandez. The 'dream final' between Steffi and Martina will have to wait yet again, as Steffi was beaten by Amanda Coetzer (again!) in straight sets 6-1 6-4.
Monday 2nd June 1997
Martina partnered Arantxa to win their third round match against Silvia Farina and Gloria Pizzichini today in straight sets, 6-4 6-1. A comfortable win for them which sets them up to play the number 7 seeds, Yakuk Basuki (INA) and Caroline Vis (NED) in the fourth round.
Sunday 1st June 1997
Martina beat Barbara Paulus today in three sets, 6-3 0-6 6-0. Martina stepped on court sporting blue highlights in her hair, but she played well in the first set and won it comfortably. In the second set, I think Martina was beginning to lose concentration, and after being 0-4 down, in the second set, it seemed that she wasn't going to try to fight back and win this set. She then gave Barbara a taste of her own medicine to win the final set 6-0. Martina's opponent for the quarter finals is her doubles partner and the number 6 seed, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario (ESP) on Tuesday. This should be an interesting match. (Hope it doesn't affect their partnership!)
Saturday 31st May 1997
Martina beat Anna Kournikova in straight sets today. Martina played much better today, than against Pizzichini. The score was 6-1 6-3, although maybe Martina should have won the second set 6-2, when she was serving for the match, but Anna broke Martina's serve. Martina's next opponent will be Barbara Paulus of Austria, the number 16 seed.
Friday 30th May 1997
Martina and Arantxa beat N Feber (BEL) and P Hy-Boulais (CAN) today in the second round of the ladies doubles 6-4 6-0 today and will have to play Silvia Farina (ITA) and Gloria Pizzichini (ITA) in round three who knocked out the number 14 seeds today.
Thursday 29th May 1997
After an early scare, Martina beat Gloria Pizzichini today in three sets. The score was 3-6 6-4 6-1.
Martina lost the first 4 games, before winning 3 in a row to pull it back to 3-4, but Pizzichini won the next two to take the set 6-3.
Then, Martina took a 3-0 lead in the second set, but lost the next 4 games for Pizzichini to take a 4-3 lead
(This had me on the edge of my seat!). Martina broke back to level the set at 4-4. Martina held her serve and broke Pizzichini's serve
to take the second set 6-4. (By now, I already knew Martina was going to win the match!)
Martina didn't hesitate with the final set and stormed into a 5-0 lead, before Pizzichini finally held serve for 5-1. Martina served out the match to win the final set 6-1.
Martina's opponent in round 3 will be Anna Kournikova from Russia.
Wednesday 28th May 1997
Martina and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, the number 3 seeds, beat Rita Grando (ITA) and Kerry-Anne Guse (AUS) 6-3 7-6 (7-2) and will have to play N Feber (BEL) and P Hy-Boulais (CAN) in round two of the Ladies' Doubles at Roland Garros
Tuesday 27th May 1997
Martina beat Henrieta Nagyova today in straight sets in the first round of the French Open at Roland Garros. The score was 6-0 6-2. A relatively easy match for Martina and a good first match from returning after her surgery. Martina will now play Gloria Pizzichini in the second round.
